I stood blissfully under the willow tree waiting for You-Know-Who to come. The cold wind ran through my skin. I pulled my jacket to my body and looked at my watch. It was nearly six in the evening yet You-Know-Who was still not around.
I pulled the card from my pocket and read it again. It was the same letter that I read the day ago. He indicated in the letter, afternoon not evening. . I sighed and looked again at my watch. It was 6:30 PM
I pulled my jacket tighter. “Maybe he forgot it really.” I concluded as I walked away from the willow tree. I wanted to cry. I wanted to cry not because he didn’t come but because of shame. I pitied myself. I closed my eyes and prayed the tears not to fall.
I walked slowly looking down and sighed for the nth time.
I stopped in my tracks as soon as I heard footsteps from my back. Fear struck me. It was evening and I was alone there, walking in the dark. I turned around and saw a pair of eyes looking down on me.
It was him
I was really rather disappointed than surprised when I realized that those eyes that I longed to see for a month, those eyes that belonged to someone I wanted to see so much, those eyes that melted me before… were hidden under the bars of a football helmet.
Yeah. The irritating football helmet.
“Hi Jendeukie…”
Aside from that helmet, the darkness added to his mysteriousness.
“Hey. Are you mad?” I didn’t speak a word. “I’m very sorry if I’m late. I forgot to indicate what time in the afternoon. Well, yeah… it’s evening. But it was late when I realized. Can you forgive me now?”
A wise thought entered my mind. “On one condition.” I wasn’t really mad at him. I was just playing fool.
“Hmmm…”
“Remove your helmet. Remove it and let me see your face even just for five seconds.”
He backed out.
“No.” He said seriously.
I walked away from him, “Then… I’m sorry Mr. Football player because I’m not forgiving you.”
He sighed heavily. “Okay, okay. I’m going to remove it.”
A smile played on my lips. Finally. Finally, I’d be able to see his face.
“On one condition.” I heard him say.
“Whatever. Just remove it, now.”
Slowly he removed his helmet. I saw half his face when he suddenly covered my eyes with his right hand.
“Hey, what the hell are you doing?!” I struggled to remove his hand from my eyes, but I couldn’t. “It’s the condition.”
“5.4.3.2.1” He took away his hand. “There you go, five whole seconds. Quits?” I saw his helmet back firmly on his head.
I pouted. “Deceiver.”
“You are so cute.” He pinched my cheeks.
I pushed him away. “Hey hey… that’s too much! Ouch.” I stroked my cheeks. “You’re so a cheater. You can see me yet I cannot see you!” Even though the helmet’s bars had spaces in between them, it was dark around and I couldn’t form an image in his face.
I walked away from him. I really loved walking out.
He pulled my arm. “Where do you think you are going miss?” I could feel him smile at me.
“Home.”
“And why?”
“There’s no use of staying here if I won’t meet who I want to meet.” I said it fast.
He didn’t answer.
“Why won’t you let me see your face? It’s not a big deal if you’re not handsome…” I paused, “… well, yeah it is better if you’re handsome but I don’t really care that much. I just want to know who you are.” I sighed.
He cupped my cheeks like how he did before. “I am someone different from who you think I am.”
“Yeah, yeah whatever.”
We talked for about an hour under the willow tree with my head on his shoulder.
“Shocks.”
“What?” I moved farther.
“I need to go. I really need to go Jendeukie. I’m sorry.” Then, he disappeared.
I sighed. He was gone, gone again.
I stood and started walking towards our street.
“Hey Jennie! Wait up!”
I looked back. It was Mino.
“Why are you here? It’s late… You might be raped or something.” He said in concerned tone. He put his arm on my shoulder. “I will protect you.”
I smiled under his gaze. “Thanks Min.”
When we arrived in our house, he removed his arm. “Good night Jennie. Sweet dreams!” I thanked him.
Just as I was about to open the door, I heard Min’s voice.
“Uh… I forgot to give you this.”
He handed me a piece of folded paper.
“Bye Jennie!” Then, he ran off. Weird.
I looked at the letter and was really shocked.
