This chapter takes place before the Prologue

When Sophie reached the kitchen, Keefe was already eating from a tray of Mallowmelts that Edaline must've baked for them.

"So," Sophie said, sitting down beside him, grinning widely. (Which meant she had a plan) "Have any plans tomorrow afternoon?" she asked skeptically.

"Yeash, I hashing out wit Bangs Buoy," he answered, his mouth full of Mallowmelt. Sophie narrowed her eyebrows. ("Yeah, I'm hanging out with Bangs Boy")

"You?" She asked, unconvinced. "Hanging out with Tam?" Keefe nodded.

"Is that the best you can do?" Sophie mumbled.

"What was that?" Keefe questioned.

"Nothing!" Sophie quickly replied.

"So who should we prank first?" Keefe asked. "I was thinking we could start off with Biana."

"Biana?" Sophie asked.

"Yeah, because we can probably swap out her makeup with some splotchy, messy makeup. I have something that would work, and after ten minutes of wearing it, it all turns vomit color!" Sophie nodded her head slowly. "We can go there once we're done. Maybe Fitz can help us. Get her distracted." Keefe smiled. "Aw, does Foster need help from her 'boyfriend'? Cute. He'll practically do whatever you say

Sophie was so angry with him. She didn't even like Fitz! Not anymore. "I don't like Fitz!" She shouted.

"Let's just go see Biana," she continued, calming herself. "And I'd like to walk, so if you have a problem with that, you can leave!" As Sophie stormed out of the kitchen, she could feel the tip of Keefe's hand for a millisecond. Had he tried to stop her? Either way, she wouldn't know because she never turned around.

"Okay, okay, I'm . . . sorry," Keefe said, out of breath. Once Sophie got outside, she ran as fast as she could to get as far from her house as possible.

"It's fine—whatever. I just don't like being picked on, especially for things that aren't even true. But—" Sophie got cut off by Keefe's ringing Imparter.

"Oops! Sorry, I have to take this." Keefe turned around and jogged a few feet away, but that wasn't what caught Sophie's attention; it was the word M.S. on the Imparter's screen.

Sophie waited impatiently for Keefe to finish, but it seemed like he's been on the phone for hours, which was probably just minutes. After the endless moments had passed, Keefe walked back over.

"Who was that?" Sophie asked.

"Oh, um, just, uh . . . Dex," Keefe answered nervously. He definitely needed to work on lying. Which made Sophie feel like taking this to the next level.

"Oh, that's odd. I called him earlier and he told me he had a very bad cold. So bad, he wasn't allowed to talk to anyone besides his mom." The pressure and tone of Sophie's voice definitely made a difference; Keefe was practically on the tips of his toes. "Yeah, well, he just called to say he's fine. Let's get going." Keefe speed-walked the rest of the way to Everglen.

Once Sophie caught up, she decided to finally spill her thoughts to Keefe. "Keefe 一 wait." Unfortunately, he ignored her! She grabbed his hand, forcing him to stop.

"Listen," she said sternly. "Why are you lying to me?" Keefe tried very hard to hide his nervousness, but Sophie wasn't falling for it. Not this time. "You know I'm right, Keefe," she continued. "Tell. Me. What's going on?" After a few moments, Keefe suddenly looked mad. Really mad.

"You looked in my bag, didn't you?" He eventually asked. "I told you not to look! Why can't you mind your own business for once? You always have all the attention 一 whether it's having, like, seventeen abilities, or having the most visits to Elwin, or having the most enemies! That's just not enough for you to handle, though. Once I have some secret, you want all in! That's what I dislike most about you: You have all the secrets in the world to keep, but when someone else has one, you need to know what it is!"

Sophie was speechless. What was there to say? It did hurt. It hurt a lot, hearing that from one of her best friends.

"Keefe . . ." Sophie didn't know if she should be upset or angry. But there was definitely more angry emotions in her.

"You know what? Keefe, I don't understand why you're being so rude over an assumption!  But yes, I did look in your bag 一 and don't get so worked up over it! You may be right, but you never knew that; you just assumed I'd looked into your bag. Just go home, Keefe. I think we both need some time to think. I don't have any clue about what these M.S. and Z.S. were talking about, and I don't think I need to know anymore. I just wanted to make sure you were safe! That letter had me worried, you know! So don't get mad at me for looking out for you! And forget the prank. Go home, Keefe."

Sophie had no idea what she had just said. She didn't intend to sound so harsh, but maybe that was better. She decided to turn around to see what Keefe was going to do now. But she then regretted looking. It made her feel so bad seeing Keefe Sencen, the Prank-Master, teaser extraordinaire, standing there, with a single tear streaming down his face.

It hurt me so much to write this chapter, especially the ending. T-T I love Keefe, and I didn't intend for this to be so emotional.
