"Sister to Mabel Scott," Cathy finished. Sophie was utterly shocked. Mabel's sister?! But why is she here? Would . . . would Mabel put her own sister in this place? Why? Sophie's thoughts were endless, but she had better things to focus on.
"We don't have much time, so we'll skip the rest." Complaints filled the room. "Oh, quiet! You'll be fine. Now, everyone should grab a kit."
Everyone stood up in unison and sauntered over to a table located at the corner of the tent, with a pyramid of cases on it. Sophie noticed that each case had a name on it. Zoe. Jake. Toby. Molly. And so forth. Once the table became deserted, Sophie asked Cathy, "Where's my kit?"
"Oh, you don't have one."
"What? Why?"
"Those kits are basically manuals to help you control your ability. There's a list of all the abilities, with ways to control them easier. You, my friend, get a tutor."
Sophie moaned. Another tutor? Seriously? Just like Foxfire . . . . That memory reminded her of where she was. Right. I got kidnapped. "Who is it?"
Cathy picked up a clipboard from a nearby table and pored over it until she gave Sophie an answer. "You get Callie. I believe she'll be here shortly."
Sophie nodded. But her free time didn't last long until Biana came. "Hey, Sophie," she said cheerfully. "I need to ask you something."
"Shoot," Sophie answered. Biana nodded and motioned Sophie to follow her. Thankfully, Callie wasn't here yet, so Sophie had some time to spare. The pair headed across the field, reaching some wooden doors.
"Where are we going?" Sophie asked as Biana clutched Sophie's wrist and raced down the hall that lay before them.
"I need . . . to show you . . . something," Biana replied between pants. They eventually neared a room labelled "Supplies".
"What's so cool about supplies?" Sophie asked.
"Just come!" Biana grabbed Sophie's wrist again and led her into the room. It was packed with boxes. Most of them were labelled Stuff, which didn't really help. After a few minutes of scavenging, Sophie looked upon a mirror, tucked away in a corner.
It wasn't broken, and it had a gold rim, with some porcelain vines and flowers on the outside. Sophie reached for it, but a soft voice filled her head over and over, repeating, Sophie? Sophie, you there? She was tempted to answer, but the voice reminded her of Calla. But . . .
Hearing the voice a couple more times in her head, it finally dawned upon her of who the voice belonged to.
Fitz.
Fitz? Sophie transmitted back. No reply. She sighed and focused on the mirror. Biana came over to help her move the boxes around the mirror.
After what seemed like an eternity, they each looked into the mirror, admiring its beauty.
"Wow . . ." Biana breathed.
"I know," Sophie answered, fascinated.
"I really outdid myself with the eyeliner today."
Sophie looked at Biana, wondering how she could be so modest, while Biana simply grinned. In the midst of moving her head back to the mirror, she glimpsed a flash of gold and pastel purple sparkles. But the moment barely lasted a second, so Sophie had no proof it was real.
But the second she set her eyes back on the mirror, she saw nothing.
