Sophie and Dex were happily laying on the two grey beanbags Boss had provided for them. It may not be much, but for them, it was a dream. It's hard to be forced to sleep on the ground while being imprisoned.
"Sophie, I forgot to mention," Dex said. "Wouldn't we be going to classes soon?"
As if on cue, Aspen strolled down the hallway, with two pieces of dusty parchment paper in his hand. "Hello . . ." He trailed off checking each piece of paper. ". . . Subject Six and Subject Seven."
Sophie gasped while Dex widened his eyes. Who else is being held captive here? "What do you mean 'Six and Seven?'" Sophie asked. "Who else is here?"
"You'll find out soon enough. Here are your schedules for the day." Aspen stuck his hand through the bars and handed Sophie and Dex each their schedules.

"What do you have first?" Dex asked once Aspen was out of earshot. He and Sophie were sitting on their beanbags, nervously poring over their schedules.
"Uh . . . I have something called 'Training.' So specific."
"What are you training?" Dex inquired.
"You tell me."
"Well, I have a class called Gadgets, which I am looking forward to."
"At least you'll have a fun time," Sophie muttered.
Dex paused, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Drat, I forgot they took our Imparters."
"Uh, no duh, dude," Sophie replied skeptically. "By the way, do you have any idea what time it is?"
"I was going to check the time on my Imparter," Dex said angrily, "I guess if we shout for help long enough, someone outta show up."
Sophie was having a hard time stifling her laughs. She had lots of friends 一 including Dex 一 but it was nice to think of him as her cousin for a little bit. He was her only family right now, so she would treasure the way she sees when it lasts.
Eventually, Dex started to laugh alongside her, which fortunately attracted one of the guards' attention. Ahren started to saunter over to Sophie and Dex.
"What's so funny?" He asked. Sophie glanced over at Dex just in time to see him smirking, which definitely meant he had some plan.
"Maybe the fact that your shirt is on backward?" Dex covered his hand over his mouth to prevent the laughs, but they were inevitable. He fell off his beanbag, laughing hysterically. Sophie didn't really think it was that funny to fall over laughing, but she did find it funny seeing Ahren's reaction.
His face was strawberry red, and he looked like he was about to cry. "Um, Ahren? Sorry about Dex. He's a little . . . weird. Anyway, I was just wondering what time it was. Sorry again about Dex."
Ahren stuttered a little bit while trying to reply. Was he really this emotional? "Um . . . well, it's 10:05 AM."
"Thank you so much!" Sophie exclaimed. What the? Sophie thought. She wasn't usually so enthusiastic about things. Maybe that thing that Boss gave them was finally kicking in . . .
Ahren walked off, muttering something that sounded like Just wait till Eadlyn hears of this! Who's Eadlyn?
Sophie shook off the thought and turned her attention back to Dex. As expected, he was still laughing. Sophie walked over to him and kicked him in the stomach. Not too hard, but enough so he'd actually feel it.
"What's wrong with you?" She spat. "That was very inappropriate behaviour of you! You better apologize to that poor guard the next time you meet!"
Dex paused, confused by the way Sophie was talking to him. "You sound like Dame Alina," he muttered.
"Now, prepare your things. Our next class begins in . . . 15 minutes."
"Okay, Miss," Dex mumbled.
Once the pair had finished getting ready for their first classes, Aspen showed up again to escort, trying very hard not to show his embarrassment from earlier.
"Dex, you are going to Gadgets, correct?"一 he waited for Dex to nod until continuing一"That will be in the lab. And Sophie, you have your Special Training."
"What's so special about it?" Sophie asked.
"You'll find out soon enough," Aspen replied calmly.
They started to leave, and when they neared the end of a hallway, Aspen thrust opens some double doors, leading Sophie and Dex outside, into a large clearing. Sophie was astonished by the beauty of it but also frightened by it. All by one simple reason . . .
"Who are they?" Sophie asked, pointing towards a group of teenagers.
Aspen gulped. "Just . . . others."
"Others like us?" Dex pressed. He must like to make Aspen feel horrible. Aspen shrugged and continued on, leading them towards a tent labelled "Gadgets."
As they walked past those teenagers, Sophie heard a familiar feminine laugh. One she knew quite well. She glanced back at them and saw an opening in between two girls. Those piercing teal eyes and luscious brown hair instantly caught Sophie's eye.
She raced over to them, accidentally pushing the two girls from before.
"What do you want?" One of them spat. She had ginger hair with beautiful sky blue eyes. Coincidentally, there was a label on her pale pink top that read Skylar. M.
"Who are you?" The other one asked. She had medium-length brown hair, with brown almond-shaped eyes. She, too, had a label on her floral knee-length dress that said, Kylie. S.
"Um, sorry about that," Sophie mumbled. She glued her eyes to the bright green eyes, afraid to make eye contact. It sounded like one of them was about to speak until she heard a different voice clear their voice. "Sophie?"
Sophie looked up, surprised to see the girl from before. "Biana?"
As you can see, I also like The Selection.
