This chapter takes place back at the present time.
"Oh, great," Sophie said to herself. She took in her surroundings, noticing how familiar they look now. "Am I in another one of those dreams?" Sophie was in Alluveterre again. But why the same place? She's never had two dreams in the exact same place. "Sophie," said a familiar voice. But Sophie wasn't curious, or scared; she was angry.
"Keefe," she said sternly.
"I'm not Keefe," the voice answered. "It's me, Calla." Sophie frowned, trying not to fall for the same trick twice.
"How can I believe you?" she asked.
"Do you really think that Keefe would try coming back to talk to you so suddenly?" She did have a point, but that's not what Sophie was interested in.
"Wait 一 do you mean I can talk to Keefe through my dreams?"
Calla nodded. "Yes, but you have the power to communicate with whomever you wish, as long as your dream is in the same plot. Therefore, you can meet in your dreams. But it's very rare. However, the chances merely increase if you are a Telepath or Empath 一 which you are 一 and if you have a Cognate 一 which you do. So you and Fitz have a higher chance of meeting in dreams. But that means you also have a high chance of meeting with一 ".
"Yes, yes, I know, I can meet with Keefe in my dreams," Sophie interrupted with a sigh. Sophie gaped and looked around as blue sparkles appeared out of nowhere, forming the shape of a short, instantly recognizable figure.
"Calla!" Sophie exclaimed. She knew it was only a dream, but seeing Calla once again made her overjoyed.
"Sophie," Calla started. "As happy as I am to see you, I need to explain something to you. Something very important." Sophie nodded her head for Calla to continue. "Yes: you can talk to whoever you want in your dreams, but they need to dream in the same plot as you. But you, Sophie, will always be here一" Calla seemed to ignore all of Sophie's reactions as if it were normal一which it probably was一"Now that you have finally gained this ability, you will always dream of the place you've always wished to be in, which seems to be Alluveterre. Now, you may be wondering why I said 'Ability.' That's because as of last week, you manifested a new ability. It may seem a little odd at first, but you'll get used to it. Not even the Council knows." Calla paused, letting Sophie have a minute to soak in all that information. But all Sophie did was gape. She stood there, jaw open, wondering what she had gotten herself into.
"What's this new ability called . . . ?" Sophie asked, still shocked. Calla cleared her throat and answered, "Your new ability is called a Visionist." Visionist? Sophie thought.
"A Visionist?" Sophie said. Calla nodded. "Yes. A Visionist gives you the power to control dreams and, as you already know, communicate with others through them. Very few people have manifested this ability, and no, you can't know who these people are. Their identities are secret."
"You sound like Mr. Forkle," Sophie muttered. Calla eyed her as if she heard her, but she showed no sign of hearing Sophie.
"As I was saying . . ." Calla continued. "I know what you might be thinking: this is boring. That's fine, but you do need to learn about it. And I do believe you are the first person who manifested this ability一" Calla gasped.
"What's wrong?" Sophie asked. Calla shook her head. "It's not you. It's just a sign I get 一 don't freak please 一 that tells me your dream is ending soon. Uh, here一" Calla snapped her fingers and a piece of paper instantly appeared in front of her.
"How'd you do that . . . ?" Sophie was totally amazed. First, she manifests some odd ability out of the blue, and by Calla, and now Calla has some magic conjuring talent.
"Take this," Calla said, handing the paper to Sophie. "I will send someone to explain everything to you. Don't open it yet. You must open it once you wake up." Sophie nodded, unsure of what to say.
"Wait," she said. "How do I know this is all real? You may not be Keefe, but how can I know that you're real? What if this is all some random dream in which I meet Calla, manifest some odd ability, and be told that I'll wake up holding some piece of paper that will tell me to meet with some person I probably don't know?"
Calla nodded her head slowly. "Sophie, you have to believe me. When you wake up, you'll know if I was lying or not. And I give you permission to tell three people. This ability needs to be kept a secret, so you can tell any three people you trust. But now I have to go." Calla snapped her fingers, which didn't conjure something. It did quite the opposite: it destroyed. Sophie remembered this moment: this was when her dream was going to end.
"Ugh, not again!" Sophie shouted as the land beneath her started to disappear. But instead of trying not to fall in, she ran and jumped off, back into the black abyss.

When Sophie woke up, she was alone in her room. Sophie got out of bed and turned on the lights. She felt something heavy in her hand all of a sudden. Sophie looked at her hand, surprised to find an envelope secured tightly in her hand.
Sophie opened the envelope and un-crumpled the piece of paper. Her heart skipped a beat while reading the first bit of the letter:
Dear Sophie Elizabeth Foster,
Come to Foxfire today at noon. I have sent one of your acquaintances to meet with you and explain the concept of your new power. (The point of having the history of it, and other effects it has to you and your body).
一 Calla
"Ugh, this sounds like some kind of textbook," Sophie sighed.
