Chapter 2
It took a week for me and Tessa to sort out our things and it took the week for me to book a flight. When we boarded the plane Tessa was in an elated mood. She was grinning in excitement to go somewhere different.
“Does my dad live in W.A?” she asked softly when we were seated. At the mention of her dad I felt my stomach tighten and the image of Taylor’s face came to my mind.
“Yes” I barely whispered. “I am pretty sure he does. He might have moved” I said shrugging. She nodded and settled back into her seat. Six hours passed and we were descending at Perth International Airport. My stomach was in knots and I was worried about going home and seeing Jaime. I gently shook Tessa awake and we got off the plane.
Jaime was waiting for us when we got out of customs and I ran to hug him. He hugged me tightly
“Hey Soph” he whispered
“Hey uncle Jaime” I said softly. He smiled and then looked over my shoulder at Tessa
“Wow you’ve grown. The last time I saw you, you were tiny” he said bringing her into a hug.
“Hi” she said uneasily. I looked at my daughter and sent her a stern look. She rolled her eyes and then pulled back
“I don't really remember you much. But mum has shown me photos” she said enthusiastically. Jaime nodded and we headed out to his car. When we arrived at my old house I loved to see that it hadn't changed. I ushered Tessa inside and looked around the familiar settings. My room looked the same as I had left it minus the baby stuff.
“All of the baby stuff is in the shed” he said from behind me.
“I didn't think you would keep it in here” I shrugged.
‘I remember this!” Tessa exclaimed picking up a small bear in the corner. I smiled as Tessa looked it over and then gently placed it back
‘Where am I sleeping?” she asked
“In the spare room sweetheart” I said showing her the room. She threw herself on the bed and closed her eyes
“I’m having a nap” she murmured. I smiled and shut the door before going downstairs to the kitchen where Jaime was cooking.
“She looks a lot like you Soph” he said
“I sent you pictures Jaime so you knew that” he looked sort of guilty for a minute
“What?” I asked
‘I sent the first one to Suzie, the one where she turned three. But I kept the others and just put them into a scrap-book. Your grandparents wanted to see their great-grand-daughter” he said smiling. I poured myself and Jaime a glass of wine and sighed
“How’s everything being going?” I asked
“Well ok I guess. I talk to Suzie every once in a while and she tells me to send you her love but recently she has said it less and less”
‘So she’s given up on me?” I asked feeling so guilty
“You didn't say a proper goodbye Soph you just left them a damn letter! How are they supposed to feel?!” he demanded slamming the knife on the bench. I took a sip of my wine and sighed
“I feel guilty but I hate goodbyes” I muttered
“Yeah I know” he said tensing his teeth.
“Does Taylor still live nearby?” I asked
“I think he lives about fifteen minutes away” he said shrugging. Then he looked up at me “Dex is the head of a co-operate sports business and Taylor owns the mechanics shop in town and he also works there” he said before putting dinner in the oven.
“Wow how long has Dex being the head of a sports company?” I asked feeling like I should have done more in my life
“About five years” he said
“I know I was a bitch but I intend to fix things before I leave” I said shrugging.
“Good but be careful. If you manage to hook Taylor again let him down gently and know your feelings” he said sternly. I nodded
“Ooh can I have a sip?” Tessa asked me coming into the kitchen. I looked at my wine and then at her before handing her the cup. She took a small sip and then wrapped her arms around my side for a cuddle.
“How was your nap?”
“Short” she wrinkled her nose.
“Well hopefully you can sleep well tonight” I said smiling.
“Am I going to school here?” she asked. I looked at Jaime who shrugged.
“I didn't think we would be here for that long but if you want to you can” I said shrugging
“I hate my other school” she said frowning. I smiled at her attitude since I was exactly the same when I was younger.
“I’ll call the school on Monday” I said before helping Jaime with dinner. Tessa set the table and then we had dinner
“So Tessa how are things in Sydney?” Jaime asked. she looked at him uneasily before answering
“Um good I guess. I have good friends and I guess I am doing well” she said looking at me uneasily again
“Tessa has a slight problem with authority” I said sending her a look which she returned
“Sounds familiar” Jaime said amusedly. “You and Taylor were both like that”
“Taylor?” Tessa asked
“Taylor is you dad” I said. I watched her reaction and cringed when she grimaced. I knew she wanted to know her dad but I was having a hard time sucking up my pride and taking her to find him.
