Chapter 24
I lifted my veil and folded it back
“What?” I asked confused
“Soph I can’t marry you when your heart belongs to someone else” he said. I froze and wondered who told him
“I know you love Taylor. Even before you knew yourself I could see it. I tried to ignore it but after our fight you went to Taylor. Twice and I saw those feelings in your eyes. I can’t stop true love even if I wanted to” he said “I love you and I probably always will. But I can’t stand making you unhappy by marrying me. So I’m saying no. Go and get him” he said. I had tears in my eyes but he was right. I kissed his cheek and sent Tessa a smile before picking up my skirts and walked down the aisle. People were talking and whispering but I didn't care because I had a groom to get. I smiled on my way out and went looking for Taylor. When I walked out I heard thunder and I prayed it wouldn't rain before I found him. I got a message from Dex telling me where I could find him. At the park just outside of town. I drove there and slipped out. I took my shoes off and ran towards the place I knew he would be. He was sitting there playing with a flower
“Hey handsome” I said standing behind him. he turned and frowned
“Aren't you supposed to be getting married?” he asked standing up
“We couldn't do it. Philip said he didn't want to make me unhappy” I said smiling. Taylor shook his head
“He is a decent guy until the end huh?”
“He was. He said that he knew I loved you even before I knew” I said walking up to him. Taylor looked down at my dress
“You look beautiful” he said
“Thank you. I was supposed to get married but my groom bailed” I said.
“Is that so?” he asked
“Yeah. So what do you say best friend? Want to get married?” I asked grinning. He slipped his arms around me and pulled me close
“hell yeah I do” he said before kissing me. I felt a few drops on my cheeks making me pull away
“Come on” he said grabbing my hand and running back to the car park. We slipped into his car just as it started to pour. He started the car
“Where are we going?” I asked
“Courthouse” he replied sending me his signature grin. I smiled and felt butterflies. When we arrived we ran up the stairs and into the courthouse. When the judge was able to see us he gave me an odd look
“I stole her from her other wedding” Taylor said winking. The judge’s eyebrows went up before smiling
“Like a typical romance film I gather”
“We are” I said looking at Taylor. We went through the proceedings and kissed to seal the deal. It was the best kiss I have ever had. We signed the license and then decided to go back to Suzie’s to tell her the news. When we arrived cars were everywhere and I was confused until we got inside and people cheered. Tessa was the first to hug us and then Suzie, Jaime, Dex and Maree before the rest of the families. I even saw Wesley in the back with a grin.
“I just want to say something!” Dex yelled causing everyone to quieten down “Here’s to my baby brother and Soph. All I have to say is finally!” he said laughing. We all laughed and Tay sent me a grin. I kissed his cheek in return
“You could have made a better clothing effort” Suzie commented. I laughed as she made fun of my husband. It felt good to say that. We ordered pizza which wasn’t exactly what I chose but it didn't matter. I changed into something more comfortable. After dinner I went looking for Jaime who was outside having a beer
“Hey there” I said walking up to him. he looked at me and smiled
“I’m proud of you Soph” he said “You didn't run and you faced everything head on. Now look where you are” he said grinning
“Thanks. I really appreciate you saying that” I said linking my arm through his.
“I wish I was the same”
“what do you mean?” I asked
“Do you remember when I told you that I was once in love?” he asked. I threw him a look
‘You didn't tell me I guessed”
“Details” he said waving it off “Do you want to know who it was?” he asked. I nodded
“Suzie” he said. I felt my eyes go wide
“You were in love with Suzie?” I asked
“Yeah for a long time. We got closer when you left and we fell in love. But then I left too often and when I got back she had met someone and was engaged. I told her to marry him and she did” he said
“I’m so sorry Jaime” I said resting my head on his shoulder
“Don't be. I’m glad you’re happy” he said kissing my head
“There you two are! Maree’s gone into labour” Taylor said.
“Oh god” we both said. I ran inside to see Maree wailing and Dex not knowing what to do
“Dex get the damn car ready” I said pushing him out the door
“Oh thank god someone with a brain” Maree said grasping my hand. Taylor and I helped her to the car and I climbed in with her while Taylor climbed into the front with Dex.
“Declande Hex I swear if we don't get to the hospital soon these will be the only kids you ever get because I will neuter you” Maree growled making my hide my laugh with a cough
