Chapter 5
When we got home Tessa went up to her room and Jaime went to the couch. I curled up on the chair I used to sit in when I was here. We settled for some weird movie. Tessa came downstairs and cuddled up to me on the couch like she did when she was younger.
“I’m sorry again” Jaime said
“It wasn’t your fault uncle Jaime it wasn’t like you planned it to turn out how it did” I said sending him a gentle smile. He nodded and then the phone rang. Jaime stood and went to answer it. I ran my fingers through Tessa’s hair and relaxed. A few seconds later Jaime walked in and handed me the phone. I frowned and prompted Tessa to sit up
“Hello?”
“I need to know if you are leaving soon” the voice said. I sighed before standing and walking outside.
“Taylor why are you calling me?” I asked
“Because I need to know if you are leaving with our daughter again” he said and I could tell he was clenching his jaw
“I don't know. She wants to go to school here so I guess we’re staying” I said “For now” I added
“Gia thinks I should apply for sole custody of Tessa” I felt my palms become sweaty
“On what grounds?” I asked trying desperately to keep my voice calm
“On the grounds that Tessa needs to be with a reliable and grounded parent. Not one that flees at the first sign of trouble”
“You wouldn't” I said through tears
“Soph I don't want to but Gia is urging me to”
“I am perfectly capable of looking after Tessa. I have raised her by myself for over eleven years” I said with a shaky voice.
“this wouldn't be happening if you hadn't upped and left” he snapped
“You pushed this on me! I wouldn't have left if you had just left me be” I said feeling pissed off
“I wanted an answer and I didn't get one” he said softly.
“Please just don't take her away from me. She wouldn't cope well”
“Are you saying she wouldn't want to be with me?”
“She doesn’t know you very well and from what we saw today she doesn’t want to know you”
“And whose fault is that?!” he bellowed
“You know what? Stuff you Taylor” I said hanging up. I took ten minutes to calm my emotions before walking back inside. Tessa looked up at me and frowned
“Mum? are you ok?” she asked
“I’m fine sweetie” I said softly before hanging the phone up
“I take it that it didn't go well” Jaime said. I shook my head at him before looking at Tessa
“His fiancée thinks that Taylor should apply for sole custody of Tessa” I said to Jaime
“Jesus on what grounds?” he asked
“Gia thinks that I am an unfit mother” I said scowling
“And what would she know about your mothering?” Tessa demanded
“Don't worry honey Taylor would never do that to me” I said softly hoping that he hadn't changed too much.
