When I met Sam at lunch the day after, he was even more excited about me trying out for the basketball team than I was. He went on and on about the team and the coach as we both filled up our plates with food.

I barely listened to him. I was still bummed out about Becca shutting me down. Maybe I was totally over reacting, but I felt like it was more than the fact that she just didn't want to go to the party. I felt like it was personal for some reason.

I knew she didn't like Sam or any of the guys, but the fact that she didn't want to be there with me either hurt a little.

"So! Excited to try out?" Troye asked me, as Sam and I sat down with them at the regular table in the cafeteria.

"Yeah I guess" I said and forced a smile.

"I guess? What's that supposed to mean?" Sam said, frowning at me.

"Nothing... it's nothing" I said and began eating the lasagna I had filled on my plate.

"Are you okay? You've been kind of off all day" Sam said while some of the cheerleaders sat down next to us.

"It's nothing, I just didn't get that much sleep last night" I said. Technically it wasn't a lie.

"Well I got some energy drinks in my car if you need it before the try out" Alex said and gave me a friendly smile.

I told him no thanks and continued eating my lasagna. They all began talking about the party at Sam's house later and I sat quietly eating and observing them like I was in a Zoo, until someone suddenly said my name.

I didn't realize it was one of the cheerleaders until I made eye contact with her. I'm pretty sure it was Sophie, the one who had been friends with Becca.

"You're coming to the party, right?" she asked me and twirled her fork around in her food.

"I am. Why?" I asked.

"Just making sure" she said and smirked at me.

I wasn't sure if she was flirting with me or not. I just gave her a friendly smile back and continued eating.

"DUDE! That was awesome!" Sam yelled at me and hit my back when we got into the changing room.

"You were so great! The coach is definitely signing you up for the team!" Troy said and padded me on the shoulder too. Alex gave me a thumbs up from the corner with a smile.

"Thanks guys" I said and chuckled. I had felt like it went pretty well too, but it was nice getting it confirmed.

"Man, I really hope we're playing the Bears this season" Sam said and sat down on the bench opposite from me.

"With you on the team we are so going to beat them!"

"Yeah, the Bears suck. We're going to kick their asses" Troy said and we laughed.

We all changed and walked back together to our cars and then said our goodbyes. Sam stayed with me after the twins walked away and we talked for a bit.

"How many are coming tonight?" I asked him.

"I don't know, about 100 I think" he answered. My eyes widened. 100 people? That was a lot more than I had imagined.

"Oh, alright" I said, looking down at the ground. I could feel Sam's eyes still on me.

"Hey man, are you okay? And don't say you're fine because you've been weird all day. I know I've only known you for a few days, but I can tell when people are not fine, and you are clearly not" Sam said and looked me in the eyes.

I sighed deeply.

"It's just... I hung out with Becca the other day, and we really hit it off but-"

"Wait, Becca? The freak with the blue hair?" Sam interrupted me.

"She's not a freak... she's really nice" I said, trying to defend her. It wasn't fair Sam calling her that when he didn't know her at all.

"Bro, it's really not a good idea to hang out with her. People are starting to really like you at this school, and now that you're most likely joining the basketball team, your popularity is only going to rise more, but if you hang out with her... trust me it's not going to go well" he said.

"I like this girl Sam, I really like her, and I want to hang out with her" I said. Honestly I didn't really care what they were saying about her, I knew she was a cool person and I wanted to spend my time with her.

"She's not a freak like everyone thinks she is. She is different sure, but she's different in a good way, in an amazing way. And the rumors you guys keep spreading about her aren't true" I continued, feeling my heart beating faster.

He was quiet for a while but then he sighed.

"You know what, fair enough. Go ahead and be friends with her and all, but when it all goes downhill in a few weeks I'm not going to be able to help you" Sam said and crossed his arms.

"But... I don't want to stop being friends with you over this, so okay. Tell me what happened" he continued saying. To my surprise he didn't reject me completely.

"Well, I asked her to go to your party tonight with me, but she completely cut me off" I said with a frustrated look.

"I don't know why, because we hit it off so well, I thought she would be glad to hang out with me again"

"I'm sorry man. Maybe the feeling just wasn't mutual" Sam said and shrugged.

"But hey, maybe you'll find someone who isn't as frustrating as Becca tonight at the party" Sam said and hit my shoulder with a smirk on his face.

"Oh, and who doesn't have blue hair" he said and raised his eyebrows before walking away

I shook my head at him. I never minded her blue hair, it didn't look weird to me, it looked beautiful.
