As soon as her little "Hello" came through my speaker, I smiled.
"Hey Becca" I said.
"Blake, hi" she said. She sounded happy, which made me glad.
"How are you?" I asked her.
"Good, you?"
"I'm good too"
Silence fell upon us. I felt like there was so much I wanted to say, but I didn't know what.
"So last night was wild, huh?" I said awkwardly.
"Yeah, it was fun. I swear I haven't laughed that hard in a long time" she said and made my heart jump a little.
"Me too" I said and chuckled.
"I hope your parents didn't kill you" she said, and I let out a breath.
"No, no... I just had to lie to them" I admitted.
"I figured" Becca said and we both laughed.
"Hey, can I ask you something?" I said and bit my lip.
"You just did" Becca teased. I could hear the smile in her voice.
"Oh, stop it" I said with a smile and she laughed.
"Go ahead" she continued.
"Why didn't you want to go with me to the party last night?" I asked, holding my breath. I just had to know why. It would kill me if I didn't get to know.
"Well, I just didn't want to go to Sam's party. The people there would all be staring at me and whispering about me, like they do at school. If I can avoid those situations, well then, I do. I'm sorry, it had nothing to do with you" she explained.
"Oh" was the only thing that came out of me.
"I really am sorry. I guess I could've sounded less rejecting" she said.
"No, it's okay" I assured her. "But you know, you could've told me all that" I continued.
"I know, I'm sorry. I guess I was just a bit scared" she admitted and I smiled.
"Stop apologizing. You know, you did save my night yesterday" I said. Becca chuckled.
"Well I'll gladly do that again" she said, and the butterflies flew around inside me once again.
"It's a date" I said.
"Hey, you know what we haven't talked about yet?" Becca said after a few seconds of silence.
"What?" I asked in confusion.
"Our physics project" she said. "Oh yeah" I said. I had totally forgot about that.
"When do you want to get started on it?" I asked her.
"I don't know... what do you think?" she asked.
"How about on Monday?" I suggested. I tried to hide the obvious fact that I wanted to hang out with her again as soon as possible.
"Isn't that a bit soon? I mean we got four weeks, right?" she said and chuckled a bit.
"Well we might as well get started on it early, it never hurts to be prepared" I said, realizing I was sounding just like my dad. I cringed at myself.
"Alright, why not" she said, and I smiled.
"Can we study at your place then?" she asked.
I didn't know what to say. I liked Becca. I really, really liked Becca, but I knew as soon as my parents saw her, they would flip out. I didn't want that for her or for me. Sure, she looked different than most people, but somehow not a lot of people could see that it was the difference that made her so beautiful.
"Blake? You still there?" Becca's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
"Uh, yeah sorry. I was thinking maybe we could do it at your place? My parents might be home, and they don't like me having people over after school" I said. I bit my lip and scrunched my nose, hoping she wouldn't see through my weak lie.
"Oh, okay. Well I guess it can be at my house, but it has to be after five then, that's when my dad's out of the house" she said.
I could sense the sadness in her voice. I had a feeling that her dad 'being out of the house' meant him going out and getting drunk with strange women somewhere, like she told me.
"Great, I'll see you Monday then" I said.
"See you. Bye Blake" she said and with that she hung up.
I was left with a big smile on my face, and my heart beating faster than normal. It killed me that this amazing girl had to deal with things like her messed up dad, and her mother leaving. She was all alone. My heart ached for her, she deserved so much better.
Not long after she hung up, I got a text from Sam asking what happened to me at the party last night. I didn't have any energy left to deal with Sam right now, so I decided to take a hot shower instead.
There was only room for one thing on my mind today, and that was Becca.'
