"Alex?" he calls again.
What do I do? I can't let him see me like this, but if I don't answer he'll come in my room.
"Emm..yeah dad?" I stutter rushing towards my bed.
I jump in and yank the pink ribbon out of my hair. I ruffle my hair to make it look messy and I kick off my shoes.
Once I'm in my bed I pull up my duvet all the way up to my mouth, hiding my entire body.
My dad suddenly peaks around my door and smiles at me, "Morning Lexy," he chimes. He walks in and comes towards my bed. I hold my breath as he sits down on my bed.
"Morning," I muffle through my duvet.
He looks at me with suspicion, "Are you..feeling okay?"
I nod my head in response and let out a yawn indicating that I'm tired. He gets the message and kisses my forehead before leaving me in peace.
Phew! That was way too close. I throw off my dress and head to the bathroom to take a brisk shower.
When I come back from the bathroom in my sky blue towel, I look over to my window...well what used to be my window. I wish my dad would take down that stupid black cover.
I contemplate asking him if he could take it down, but I get scared just thinking of asking. I don't want to remind him that I snuck outside..that's just asking for it.
Once I dry my body, I braid my hair into two french plaits and put on my grey over-sized sweatshirt and black leggings.
Ughhh!! I'm so bored. I open up my laptop and check my e-mail. My eye scans over an e-mail from my English teacher. The subject reads "English Assignment"
I look in confusion and click on it.
Dear Alexandra,
I read your piece on "What life means to you," and I have to admit I was very impressed. I have put your name forward to be in with a chance to read your speech in front of a few schools. I have no doubt in my mind that you will be chosen for this position. Your choice of words are beautiful and are excellently structured. Well done again!
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Nickleson.
OH MY GOD!! She chose my piece to put forward. I totally forgot about the whole English competition thing. I guess I've had other things on my mind.
I jump up and down with excitement. My mum rushes in with a concerned expression.
"What's all the noise for?" she asks.
"My English assignment has been put forward into a national competition, if I win then I get to read my piece in front of a ton of people!!!"
I grab her and hug her tightly, she laughs and hugs me back, "Well done!"
I hope I win, I really do.
-----------------------------------
I head downstairs for dinner and I get greeted with the aroma of spices and seasonings. It smells like roast chicken and I also smell something sweet. My mouth begins to water uncontrollably.
I open the kitchen door and see my dad at the dinner table...for once. I'm surprised he isn't in his office. Usually he either doesn't eat or mum brings him his dinner in his office.
The table is spread left to right with food. There are mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli and a succulent golden brown roast chicken in the middle of it all.
Damn! Why is she cooking so good tonight. Don't get me wrong she cooks good all the time, but this seems...extra special.
I greet them with 'hellos' and sit down opposite my dad. He looks like he's in a good mood.
"Alex..we have some news" she exclaims.
"What?"
"Do you want to tell her?" she looks over at my dad clasping her hands tightly together. He nods and takes over from where she left off.
"A friend of mine is going on a business trip, so....they asked us to take care of his child while he's away,".
I look at them in confusion. Why are they making it out to be such a big deal? It's just some kid. Personally, I think as long as the little booger stays out of my stuff then I'll be happy.
"So...what do you think?" mum says after a few seconds.
I don't know what to say. Where's this kids mum anyway? How come she can't mind him while his dad's away?
I don't hate the idea...I just..I'm not great with kids, they all hate. I'm serious! Kids have some type of vendetta against me.
"I think it's great," I lie.
"I can't wait for you to meet him. His dad and I are really really good friends, and we haven't had another kid in the house in ages." dad explains.
"He's also troubled, so we're gonna try and straighten him out," mum adds.
They both get up and hug me making me feel extremely loved. Maybe that's the reason dad is trying to stop drinking, because of this child. Maybe he wants to be clean once the kid gets here. If it is then kudos to him, it just means less arguing for me.
"Dad? Can I ask you something?" I gotta ask him while he's in a good mood.
"Shoot!"
"I think I've learned my lesson about going outside so...Could we take the covers off the windows? Please?"
"Yes, the house is so dull with them up. Please" my mum adds in.
My dad ponders for a few moments before letting out a sigh of defeat, "Fineeeee." My mum and I jump up in delight and wrap our arms around him.
Yes I know what I said was a lie and yes I know it's probably a bad idea but...what the heck!
You only live once!
