In a dark room on the Galra cruiser, a girl is sat in the corner of her cell, trying to shut out the world. She had hair black as the night sky and pale skin from lack of natural light. No one knew why the bandana she wore around her eyes was so important. If anyone ever tried to remove it, they were met with several cuts, bruises, even a broken bone. There was one Galra who was extremely persistent and died trying. Eventually, they stopped trying to get it away from her.
She was wearing the standard prison outfit. A black bodysuit with an ill-fitting purple shirt. She had an oddly shaped sphere that attached to her feet, preventing her from touching the floor and walking. This girl was blind; her eyes cut by the car accident that stole her mother from her. Recently, her only friend had left her and was probably dead. Now she was alone and had to live with his death on her shoulders. 'If only I did my job right.' she thought bitterly. 'Then he would still be alive.'
She remembered him so well. The eyes that would comfort her when she was sad. The smile that had proven to be infectious. The firm, protective grip that held her after every torture and arena battle. And now, he was gone. She only had one thing left. His name. "Oh Shiro, I miss you so much." She said in a barely audible whisper, trying to hold back tears. The druids found a... unique method to get her to break. Physically scaring her did nothing. She had nothing else to live for.
Mental torture, however, was another story. She had so much regret, so many times where she felt that she hadn't done enough and felt weak. That is what got to her. Every time she went to that horrible room, memories would play back in front of her to watch as they screamed 'your fault, Your Fault, YOUR FAULT!' Once they had unlocked her memories, she didn't last long. They broke her. The reason she was so special was a reason that had Zarkon himself often asking Haggar about her progress.
This girl could connect with the lions of Voltron, and locate them, something only the princess of Altea herself was rumored to be able to do. Once, they realized this, the torture worsened, trying to break her so they could find the lions.
Suddenly, alarms started going off. Someone opened the cell door. "Pl-Please, no more," she said, curling up into a tight ball, afraid that they were going to take her back to that awful room, "I'm trying to connect to the lions, but the connection they have made with their paladins is strong. B-But give me more time and please. No more." She waited, expecting to feel a kick in the side from a Galra soldier or robot for not coming immediately. Maybe even the hissing voice of a druid telling me to stop her blithering nonsense and get up. Instead, she heard a new voice.
"Don't worry, I'm not Galra. Are you alright?" the voice asks. The voice sounded like they were male. Their voice had kindness but also sorrow around the edges, like they were expecting to find someone else here. 'They probably were,' says her subconscious. 'I mean, why would anyone rescue me. A girl no one knows and has done nothing but get her family killed.'
'Of course not alright. I'm a prisoner on a Galra cruiser and my only friend has been stolen from me.' She thought bitterly. "I'm alive," she finally responds. "Who are you?" She tries to hide her blindness by looking where the voice was coming from. 'Don't go flaunting all of your weaknesses to random strangers, Crystal. This could be the Galra trying to trick you since they know you can't see.' her subconscious whispered.
"My name is Pidge, I am the pilot of the Green Lion" As soon as he says this, she froze. 'So the paladins are the ones attacking the ship.' she thought.
"Can you... Can you help me?" she asked, praying with all her might that the answer would be yes.
"Of course I will. What kind of question is that!? I'm not gonna just leave a wounded girl on a Galra prisoner ship!" he says, obviously referring to my multiple cuts, bruises, and currently broken, wrist.
My heart swells. 'This is it. This is your chance to escape!' she thought. But she remained calm as the person walked over to her, probably inspecting her restraints.
"Careful," she warned him. "It's rigged to close tighter and send an alarm to the bridge if it feels anything or anyone trying to remove it."
"Well that won't be a problem," they say, almost gleefully. "Rover, open it up."
She heard a small whirring noise, to what she guessed was a Galra drone. Most likely repurposed to help this Pidge. A moment later, the shackles split open, and then she could finally see. The Galra were careful in designing the shackles to make sure her feet didn't touch ANYTHING. She brushed my feet as if to make sure they were still there. They were free for the first time in days. She then looked at Pidge, finally being able to see what he looked like. They were short and wearing armor. underneath their helmet, they had short hair that brushed past their ears. Then I realized, 'Oh, Pidge is a girl' She stood up, wobbling, but standing at last.
"Thank you," she said, her voice on the verge of breaking, her eyes holding back tears of happiness.
"Now, let's get you out of here," Pidge says, motioning for what she guessed was Rover to follow her.
"Wait!" she cried out. She quickly rushed over to a nook in the wall, hidden by a loose panel of metal. She removed it and pulled out three things. First, a dagger given to her by a Galra named Ulaz who had tried to help her and Shiro escape. He had given it to her and said: "When the time is right, this blade will lead you." The second item was a necklace, given to her by her mother. She hid it for fear that it would be taken from her as everything else had been. The third and final item; a compass. It was given to her by her father and even though it didn't point North, he told her that "it will always lead you in the right direction." Memories crashed over her, worse than the druids' experiments had.
"Ok, now we can go," she said at last.
She nodded."Follow me." Then, she heard a very small and quiet voice.
"Yeah, I found another prisoner aboard just like that alien told us," Pidge said. A few moments pass, then she speaks again. "No, I haven't gotten her name." Another pause. "Well she has cuts and bruises, and her wrist seems to be badly broken, but she can still walk." A few more moments. "Got it, see you then." Then the voices stop.
"Ok, so the first escape pod full of prisoners has already left, so we are going to need to send you in one of your own. Got it."
"Yes, lead the way Pidge." We run down the hallway after hallway, until finally, we arrive in the hanger.
"Quick, get into the pod. The Galra are coming." Pidge says in a confident tone, but I can tell that there is fear around the edges. I start running to the pod when all of a sudden I hear a bang. The door is broken open by many sentries. I successfully get into the pod, but when I take a moment to calm down get a picture in my mind of the surroundings and look at Pidges partner, I see a familiar face.
'Shiro,' I think then the pod blasts toward Arus.
