Colette was frozen in her spot as she looked at all the people around her, trying to imagine them all being the blood sucking monsters that she had grown up being terrified of.She had grown up, practically being raised by Billy Black, Sue Uley, and Harry Clearwater. Of course the two had married now, Sue becoming a Clearwater. She had grown up with other big brother and big sister influences, but that also came with bedtime stories and legends to keep her out of trouble.
She had heard of the cold ones, how they terrorized the tribe, slaughtering them just for their own enjoyment. Drinking their blood and shattering hearts as they went. Just to say the name cold one around her at a young age was enough to have her scramble out of whatever mischief she had in mind.
Getting out of her head, instead she got brought back to the fact that Carlisle was in fact a doctor, who worked around blood constantly, and someone who she felt immediately safe with. It didn't make sense to her, so naturally she got defensive.
"Is this some sort of sick joke to you?" Colette asked Carlisle, her eyes flickering to the others, but keeping him in her sights.
She had missed the look of dread in Edwards eyes who had of course been keeping a close read on her thoughts. He saw the memory of Sue jokingly telling a young Colette that if she didn't stop eating all those cookies, that she had made for herself as she was heavily pregnant at the time, that the cold ones may come back. The young girl's eyes went wide as saucers, apologizing as she ran away, in search of her brother.
Cole's eyes slightly watered in anger. Who was he to make up something like this about what she saw. She confided in him for Christ sake, and he was making fun of her.
"Cole, I would never lie to you, especially about something like this." Carlisle told her, begging her to believe him. Reaching forward to hold her hand, she pulled it out of his reach, taking a step back. "Colette-" "Vampires aren't real Carlisle." She told him, looking directly into his golden eyes. Her heart broken gaze collided with his pleading one.
"Cole-" "No Edward, they're not real. I'm sorry if I don't agree with your lifestyle or you think that you all are some supernatural creatures. I-" "Cold ones." Edward said softly and her mouth snapped shut, her head whipping around to face him. "Wh-what did you just say?" Her voice was quiet, but you could hear the stutter in it. "Cold ones. That's what we are." He told her. "What?" She whispered, her head reeling. A small shiver of terror ran through her as she looked over each and everyone one of the people in the room.
**Flashback**
A ten year old Colette sat on an overly used couch as she watched Sue Clearwater move about the house. "Sue please! Charlie and I were gonna watch a scary movie tonight! I just want to get over my fear. Please tell me about her."
Sue paused, breathing out her nose at the consistent child. She was the one to bring up the cold ones in the past, so if anyone should truly tell her about them, it was her.
Billy didn't like the idea of her knowing. Not because she wasn't a part of the tribe, she was practicing living with them at points, but because he didn't think she was old enough.
Sue argued that the native children grew up on the same legends. Billy agreed with her, but not before mentioning the fact that the truth behind those legends were only known by a select few.
Sue sat down across from the girl, a giddy look on the child's face that Sue knew would soon be replaced with fear.
"Do you remember me telling you about the spirit warriors who protect the tribe?" Sue asked as the girl nodded.
