As soon as the young couple had left, Carlisle went out searching for Colette. Alice had told him of how after she regained control, she ran, though Alice couldn't hear how far.
Carlisle remembered how when she was first turned, she loved to watch the fish in the stream, the boundary line between them and the wolves, that's where he found her.
Leaned up against a tree, her eyes closed though tears still ran down her porcelain cheeks. "Colette." He sighed softly as he sad down beside her. Her eyes opened, their bright gold still a little darker than normal, but there as she stared off into the trees.
"I could have killed her."
Cole's words hung in the air before Carlisle. "Could have and did, those are two different words." He told her, but it didn't seem to help. "She's my niece. And I almost ended her life." "Darling, accidents happen. But you handled it well."
"An accident? Is that what you think happened?" Cole asked her mate, turning to look at him. "An accident is when you trip, or when you have a fender bender. Not when you put someone's life on the line. I was stupid to think I could just play human." She told him.
"You are new to this world Colette, there is so much you have to learn, yet you put so much responsibility on your shoulders." "Because I have to!"
"No you don't. We're partners. We do this together. I have 365 years of experience to help you, you just have to ask. This was your first time with blood, and that of someone whose blood seems to sing to so many people. This was not a loss, but a win. You did excellent." He told her and he felt her body relax as she sobbed into his chest. He held her, soothing her as best as he could until she had released the emotions she had been harboring.
The two sat in silence, Cole soaking in the time with Carlisle, as the book she seen once again coming to her mind. She understood the reasoning behind her feelings now. Bella and Edward, and untimely herself and Carlisle were following the same roads Romeo and Juliet were, just slightly obscured. Where theirs were for love, the current situation was for survival.
"We need to get back. Edward has called a family meeting." Carlisle told her quietly as to not disturb the peace, but it had been disturbed long before he spoke.
"Okay." She said quietly as Carlisle helped her up, wiping the leaves away from her dress, she cringed as she thought of Alice's reaction to her dress.Getting back to the house and as soon as the two were in the door, Colette heard the words that terrified her. "We're leaving." "What? This needs a discussion Edward, not an impromptu decision." Cole spat. "We're not safe for her, or Charlie." "It was a one time thing, I'll get better. They're not safe with us gone. Adam is still out there." Cole begged.
The house was quiet though. "Carlisle!" Colette said as she turned to look at her mate, but she could tell by the look in his eyes that he agreed with his son. "It would give you space and freedom. The ability to get used to humans that aren't your family." "Carlisle! That's my niece, my brother. I'm not leaving them."
"And I can't leave my family, Colette, not with Rose and the baby. You have to understand." Carlisle begged and her eyes watered. "I do understand. I do, but please understand where I'm coming from as well. My families life is in danger and I have to stay. I will not leave them to fend for themselves. We brought this danger on them, you can't just run."
"You are the danger!" Edward snarled and Cole snarled back. "Have you forgotten about Victoria? How about Laurant? They are all threats, Edward. Much bigger threats than you or I. If you leave, someone has to protect them." Colette snarled.
"She needs a human life. A life I can't giver her! I should have never brought her into the supernatural." Edward told her and Colette flinched. "Edward, she's happy with you. She knows the risks and is willing to become one of us." Cole tried to reason with him, but he was passed that.
"That's the problem Colette! There shouldn't have been an us to begin with! This started with you and Carlisle! It should have never happened! Humans don't belong with vampires." He yelled at her, and she backed up. "Edward!" Carlisle hissed, as he seemed to be blaming all of this on them, more though on Colette.
"I was dying!" Cole shouted. "Maybe you should have stayed that way." Edward shouted then realized what he said. "Cole, I-I didn't-" "I can't do this." She said quietly as she backed up, her eyes wide, Carlisle watching as her walls seemed to build around her heart in front of him. "This needs to end, now. I'm sorry Carlisle, but I can't. I have to protect my family. With or without you." Cole said as she sped from the house leaving the it quiet.
A/N: I pulled an uno reverse! I'm sorry! I had thought about keeping them together, but I like the sorrow it adds to it. That may be bad of me to say, but it's true. I hope this doesn't upset too many people. Also Merry Christmas everyone!
