Immediately i got home,I sorted out the items i got from the supermarket then proceeded to the kitchen to prepare lunch.
I was rinsing off the last pan when Future walked into the kitchen with my phone in his hands."Momma your phone is ringing."
I turned off the running tap and wiped my hands dry with a hand towel before collecting the phone from him and mouthed a thank you to him.
Settling in a kitchen stool,i swiped the green answer button to the left and answered."Hello love, how are you doing?"
After clearing her throat, she responded."Hey dear,I'm doing good and you?"
"Good. Are you done with your exams?"
"Yeah, finished two days ago and it went well."
"Oh,that's great."
After a long pause,i finally decided to ask her about her grandmother but she beat me to it.
"I feel so heartbroken Karen."She sobbed over the phone."What's wrong?"
"It's granny."She replied sniffing.
When she realised that my silence meant that she should continue, she started."She's been down with a heart disease and..and...she just had to d..die now, just like that. Why now Karen, why now?She promised to stay strong for me."
"It's okay love, calm down okay.Everything will be fine."I assured her.
"I can't bear this loss Karen. She was more like my mother and confidant."
"I know Erica but don't say you can't bear it because i know you can, you're a strong woman.I understand that she was a better part of your life but please don't be too hard on yourself okay? You have to stay strong for your mother, your loved ones and everyone you care about."
"I wish she stayed a bit longer."She said through a stifled sob.
"It's okay dear,i understand how you feel."
"You do?"
"Yes i do."
I really understood how Erica felt.I had also lost loved ones,my paternal grandparents.
I lost them when i was barely 12 years old. They were returning from a family outing and my uncle Sampson was driving while my grandparents and my cousins were seated at the back of the car.Thankfully, uncle Sampson and my cousins survived while my grandmother died few hours later at the hospital and my grandfather died at the spot.I could still remember how hurt and broken my daddy was.I really felt it too because grandma and i were really close.
My dad wasn't talking with uncle Sampson for sometime but they later reconciled. If there was anything that was inevitable,it was death.I felt pity for Erica, her tears broke my heart. She was really close to her and her demise would take a toll on her.
"So where are you now?"I finally asked."Back home in Kentucky. The funeral is slated for this Saturday."She informed me
"Honestly i wish i can make it for her funeral."I pouted, even though she couldn't see me.
"It's totally fine,i understand."
"Okay dear,thanks for understanding."
I tried to lighten her mood by talking about our childhood memories and other things.
I made a mental note to call her mother later and send my condolences. She wasn't just my bestie's mother, she was like a mother to me.Friends are supposed to stick with each other and be there for each other in times like this and that's exactly what i planned to do.Erica isn't just a friend to me,she's like a sister i never had.
