Chapter 28

I arrived at the Mateos' residence few minutes past 9:00pm.Taking a deep breath, I smoothened my dress;a green flare floor length gown which I matched with a silver clutch purse and heels. It wasn't my first time being in their house but I couldn't help but admire the magnificent building before me and all the exotic cars parked around.Men on suit and women on beautiful dinner gowns were hanging around outside, each one of them had company but i was alone.

"Hey,Karen!" Brandon,Valerie's brother came over to hug me."You came."

"Wow!You look great Bran,I love your suit." I complimented as I pulled out of his embrace.

Brandon is Valerie's brother, step brother to be precised.Her mother got married shortly after she had Valerie and she had three children with her husband; Andrew who's a year older than me, Brandon who's a few months older than me and Gwendolyn who would be thirteen by December.

"Thank you. You don't look bad yourself." He said.

"Hope I'm not too late?" I asked him.

"Of course not,party just got started." He entwined his hand with mine as he ushered me into the house.

"Karen!" Mrs Mateo called,beckoning me over with her finger.

I went over to greet her,"Happy birthday ma'am."

"Oh,thank you sweetheart. Welcome."

I handed her a small gift bag I was holding. "Here,it's for you."

"Awww,You didn't have to." She said as she peeped into the bag."I love it, it's beautiful. "

I didn't know what to get for her so I just settled for a Hannah Martin gold wrist watch and I was happy she loved it.She handed the gift to one of the maids before going to greet some of her guests while I went to greet Valerie's step Dad and her grandparents.

The night was moving smoothly.I was with Valerie before she went to attend to something so I was sitting alone,playing with the rim of my champagne glass when I felt my phone buzz from inside my purse which was on my laps.
I took it out of my purse and saw 7 missed calls from Molly.I stepped outside to call her back because it was noisy inside.I was already panicking because I left my son under her watch and now she's called me 7 times.

She finally picked up on the third ring."Hello Molly, sorry I missed your calls. Is everything alright? "

"Yeah,all is well.He was having a nightmare and couldn't fall back asleep so I figured hearing your voice would help him."

I held my chest as I sighed in relief."I got scared when I saw your missed calls.Is he asleep now?"

"Yes he is.You don't have to be worried."

"You sure I shouldn't come back?"

"It's unnecessary, everything is under control okay?"

"Okay.I've got to go now."

"Alright, enjoy your night."

After talking to Molly,I turned to go back into the house when I saw Andrew who informed me that Valerie was looking for me and she's at the pool side.

"Hey sis,where have you been?" She asked me.

"Just stepped out to call Molly and check on my son."

"Is he alright?"

"Yeah,sure."

I noticed she was with some ladies around her age and a young man who was on a phone call,backing us.

"Girls,meet my sister Karen." She said before turning to me,"Karen meet Tiffany and Kim, they were my class mates from high school. "

"Hello,nice to meet you." Tiffany and Kim said in unison

"Same here." I smiled as I shook hands with them.

"I also want you to meet my fiancée." Valerie told me.

"Oh,where's he?"I asked out of excitement.I couldn't wait to see the man after my sister's heart.I've heard a lot of good things about him but I've not met him.

"Honey?" She called the young man who was backing us and he turned, leisurely walked up to us and held Valerie around her waist.

"Honey, this is my sister I've always told you about, Karen.Karen, meet the love of my life,Cameron."She smiled and pecked him.

"Nice meeting you, Karen." The voice I was very much familiar with said to me.

Hey guys today's my aunt's birthday and I'm dedicating this chapter to her.Please help me wish her well.
