"Mikey it's dark in here."
"Shh, they're coming."
"But I only want to make you come."
"Ash, shut up. I need to talk to your family, preferably without a boner."
"But Micha-"
"I'm closing the door."
Michael shut the door quickly upon seeing Harry. He flashed him a smile, motioning for the young boy to sit on one of the three chairs laid out. "Hey, Harry," He said, loudly enough for Ashton to stop banging on the door.
"Hi?" Harry said uncertainly; Michael had already said hello.
"Where's Anne and Lauren?" Michael asked, subtly stomping his foot against the door as Ashton's drumming had become annoying.
"Right here," Anne's chirpy voice said a she entered, Lauren trailing behind her. "What's going on? Where's Ashton?" She asked as her and Lauren took their seats.
"Mr. and Misses Irwin, I would like to present to you the premiere of Ashton Irwin," Michael said, taking a step away from the narrow brown door.
Ashton took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. His hand rested on the cool gold doorknob, ready for it to open. Closing his eyes and opening them again, he slowly began to twist the knob.
Ashton stepped out of the closet, fear of acceptance clear in his eyes. He looked over at Michael, who smiled and gave him a little nod.
Ash took another deep breath. This was it.
Come on, Lauren. Mum. Let's go, he thought to himself as his eyes scanned over their faces.
"Wait," Lauren said after 43 seconds of long thinking. "Does this mean - Are you-"
"Ashton, are you gay?"
Everyone's eyes shot towards Harry.
"Harry!" Anne gasped. "How do you know that word?"
"People say it all the time at school," Harry said with a nonchalant shrug. "And they say it like 'coming out of the closet'. That's what you did, right?" The ten year old directed the last part to Ashton.
"Yeah," He said through a breathy and awkward laugh, scratching the back of his neck.
"How long has it been?" Anne asked, looking slightly pale. Ashton worried most about her opinion, and seeing the lack of colour in her cheeks worried him greatly.
"Four years, about," He said, shifting from foot to foot.
"I knew it," Lauren said casually, leaning back and picking at her nails.
"How?" This time it was Michael who spoke.
"You guys aren't quiet."
*cue rosy-cheeked Michael, wide-eyed Ashton, confused Harry and faint Anne*
"Oooo-kay," Anne drug out the word, holding on to Harry's shoulder. "So, what it seems to be is you're, um, coming out of the closet?" Anne asked and Ashton nodded his head in confirmation, playing with his thumbs.
"And you, Michael? I'm assuming you are as well?" She asked and Ashton covered his face with his hands; dear God, Mum, he thought.
"Um, not really. I'm both," Michael said, feeling slightly uncomfortable.
"Oh, alright. So, are you two like, a thing?"
"Ewww." Harry and Lauren said in unison, and it took everything in Michael not to burst out laughing.
"No, Mum, we're not a thing," Ashton said with a roll of his eyes. I wish we were.
"Better not be."
