"Okay kids, you're going to need to be quiet. Don't talk to anyone. Don't stare. And please, no fighting." Ashton's mum said as they walked behind a police officer.

"Okay." They said in unison as they went through double doors.

All around them were tables; people with orange jumpsuits sat talking with others, family members, friends, who knew. The walls were a dark grey, which made it look even more prison-like. Light came in from widows mounted high up on the ceiling, strategically placed so the inmates couldn't get out.

Anne quickly led them over to a table on the right, where a lone man in his late twenties to early thirties sat with his head down, focused on a piece of paper in his hands. Anne motioned for them to sit down on the opposite side, putting Harry on Ashton's lap so there was more room.

"Hello," She said sweetly and the man's head raised. His eyes swept over the family quickly, and Ashton felt his heart jump into his throat.

It was Joseph.

"Been a while, Anne, hasn't it?" He said in his gruff voice, which traced an English accent, obviously not recognizing the paleness of Ashton's face. "Can't remember the last time we spoke. Don't recall meeting this one." He gestured towards Harry, who squirmed uncomfortably.

"My name's Harry," He said, sticking out his hand in a polite manner. He recoiled when Joseph didn't take it.

"Ashton, Lauren, Harry, this is my old friend, Joseph. You most likely don't remember him, Lauren, but Ash maybe you do?"

Ashton paused for a moment, searching his brain for a memory containing Joseph.

"Right," He said after a moment, still unable to find one. "Joseph."

"Getting big, eh, Ash?" Joseph said, looking up at Ashton.

"Er, yeah," Ashton felt squeamish. "Just turned eighteen."

"Nice, nice. You look good."

"Thanks."

"So," Anne said and Joseph's dark eyes turned towards he instead. "Have they told you anything on... You know?"

"Not really." Joseph said after clearing his throat. "Got a hearing on the 18th. Don't know what's gonna happen."

"Well, you can't say you don't expect certain things-"

"What did you do?" Lauren asked suddenly. Harry looked relived someone asked, Anne looked angry she had asked such a question, Ashton was incredibly pale and Joseph remained calm.

"Something you shouldn't do." Joseph said, his voice low.

"Why did you do it then?"

Joseph's eyes turned colder than they already were. "Lauren," He said slowly. "It's not good to ask questions about things you know nothing about."

"O-Okay. I'm sorry." Lauren said quietly, putting her head down and playing with her thumbs.

"I think you should leave, Anne."

"Joseph, I'm sorry about her-"

"No, it's alright." Joseph said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Seriously though. I think it's best."

"Oh," Anne said. "Alright."

"Wait a sec," Joseph said as the family stood. "Where's Ron?"

//an gs idk what Ashton's dad's name is so we're gonna pretend its Ron okay? okay.//

"Um," Anne shifted uncomfortably. "We divorced a few years ago. He lives in Adelaide now."

"D'you three still see him?" He nodded towards Ashton and his siblings.

"Not really," Ashton answered quickly, not wanting the other two to slip up. "But he calls for every birthday."

"Right," Joseph muttered something the quartet couldn't hear. "Well, nice to see you Anne. You as well, kids."

"Goodbye, Joseph."

Aaaaassh-"

"Not right now."

Michael fell off his bed as he spun around, scared once again by Ashton silently entering his room. "Dammit Ash! You need to stop doing that."

"Sorry."

Michael picked himself up, sitting on the bed again and checking the time. "Wait, what are you doing here it's only four?" Then he smirked, raising his eyebrows. "Couldn't wait to see me?"

"Yes and no," Ashton said, quite nervous. Please don't hate me, please don't hate me, he prayed.

"Ash, is something wrong?" Michael asked as he walked over to Ashton, resting his hand on Ashton's tense shoulders.

"Michael I'm so sorry I don't know who did it or why my mum is friends with them but please don't hate me-"

Ding dong.

"Be right back." Michael said, preparing to leave his bedroom.

"No!" He exclaimed, reaching out for Michael's hand to stop him.

"Ash, it's just the doorbell-"

"No, Michael please, don't-"

"Michael! Get the door!"

"I have to now," He said after hearing Nanie call. "Ash, let go."

Reluctantly Ashton let go of his hand, but followed close behind as he descended the stairs. His breaths were shaky and he began to sweat; f*ck you, Mum, he thought.

Michael opened the door without checking the peephole and smiled when he saw Anne, Harry and Lauren.

"Hi, Mrs. Irwin, what're you-"

His heart stopped.

"What the hell are you doing here?"
