"It's not going to catch,"I muttered crossing my arms. The lads were trying to start a bondfire to warm the chilly air. My thin sweatshirt gave me no warmpth whatsoever. They were using damp wood and had just thrown the wood on in a huge pile, and were expecting it to catch.
"Yes it will."Harry said crouching by the pile holding a small box of matches.
"No it won't,"I repeated. I remembered my dad telling me "Now Liah, when you make a fire like this, the wood has to be dry enough that the fire will catch and start to burn the wood. If it's in a cone shape like we made then it will burn brighter, longer, and better."
"Why daddy?"
"That's just the way it works."
That was before he left and when I was probably six years old. We were in out back yard in the summer time, just me and dad because mum was gone on buisness. He wanted to show me the constellations. That night we slept under the stars.
"How do you know?"he asked annoyed. I met his green eyes.
"Well, this wood is really damp. If it catches it will give off lots of smoke, which will keep the bugs away.....but with them like this,"I gestured to the pile,"The wood won't burn for as long as it could. And there's a greater chance of it putting itself out." I balled the cuffs of my sweatshirt in my hands and crossed my arms shivering. If you'll stop being a stuborn guy then we can get the fire going and won't be freezing our asses off!
"My dad taught me when I was small."I walked over and crouched down by Harry. "If we want it to burn for a while then we do a cone shape."
"Then I guess we'll have to change it,"Liam sighed. I nodded and shivvered again. Why was it so cold!?
"I'll warm you up."Harry said flirtily, wrapping his arms around me, pulling me to him. He sat down, pulling me onto his lap and laying his arms on my legs rom behind me.
"Hey!"I yelped trying to get away.
"I'm just trying to help. You know what? Sharing body heat will get you nice and warm." He winked at me. I had ideas of what he was thinking.
"Okay. That's...no."I shook my head fighting to get away.
"No! Liah let me love you!" he wailed theatrically. I rolled my eyes and heard Niall laughing.
"Hey curly. Hands off."he said.
"No."Harry answered wrapping his arms tighter around my waist. I gave up and sat there, shivering. Liam and Zayn had begun to move around and I saw Louis and Alex standing a little ways away talking and laughing, their heads close together. I was really happy for them. Like, really happy. Harry let me go and I stood up quickly. I tried to move to Niall quickly, but Harry put his hands on my shoulders.
'Help me!' I mouthed to Niall. He just laughed. The little turd. That's why I love him. I couldn't help but smile.
"There."Liam said brushing his hands on his jeans.
Harry fished the matches from his pockets and I used that as an opportunity to escape. I darted to where Niall was standing. I stood next to him wanting them to get the fire lit already. How many guys does it take? Well aparently three and me. Harry, Liam, and Zayn and me. I watched, praying, as Harry struck a match and threw it onto the pile. It snuffed almost immeaditly as it hit the pile.
"Well that didn't work." Louis' voice came from behind me making me jump. Niall put his arm around my waist, pulling me to his side. I watched as Harry tried again, accheving the same results as before.
