When Liah responded, I knew she was a lot more upset than the text. Every part of me was starting to bubble with anger at Niall. He KNEW about Dalton. He KNEW that Liah was fragile about things like this. He KNEW Liah loved him. And yet... there was the picture. What had happened?
I angrily dialled Niall's number, almost cracking my phone as I pressed the screen so hard. I listened to the diall tone, my frustration building with every ring. I heard him pick up.
"Hello?"
"What the hell is your problem, you selfish bastard! How could you do this to Liah? God you are SO lucky I'm not in range of you!"
"Alex! Please let me explain! Liah didn't give me the chance! Please," he sounded as drunk as Louis did. I bit down on my tongue to contain another wave of insults.
"You have one minute. Starting now," I said through gritted teeth.
"I was drunk and I thought I saw Liah. But it wasn't. And then this girl... she just attacked me. I-"
"Niall that is the oldest line in the book! 'She kissed me!' Please." I said cutting him off. I was gripping the phone so hard that my knuckles were white.
"I swear! She was all over me, and I pushed her away. Please, Alex. You have to believe me. Liah won't even pick up her phone to let me explain. Please." He sounded as if he was about to cry, but I still was not convinced.
"Horan, it's not me you should be begging to, so stop your pleading." I paused and breathed.
The silence on the other end gave me a moment to think. Should I believe him? I didn't know. I closed my eyes and cringed as I spoke.
"Alright. I... I believe you. But you need to call Liah." I sighed. "God, I'm gonna regret this. Okay... I'm gonna do a three-way call with her. You keep your mouth shut until I say so. Got it?"
"Yes. Thank you Alex I-"
"Just shut up before I change my mind," I said dialling Liah's number.
I waited, and after a moment, she picked up.
"Hello?" she sniffled.
She had been crying...
"Hey babe. It's me," I said softly.
"H-Hey Alex."
"Are you alright? Do you need me to come over?" I said, tempoarily ignoring explaining things to Liah. I needed to be a friend first.
"Y-Yeah that'd be n-nice."
"Okay, good. Because I already have my keys." In fact, I was already in my car, starting the egnition.
Okay. Time to explain.
"Liah? I need to tell you something. It's about the picture-"
"Please Alex just- no. I-I don't want to t-talk about it."
"We need to though. It's important," I insisted.
She sighed.
"Fine. What is it?" she said weakly.
"I talked to Niall. He was drunk and he was tricked into kissing her. It's not what it looks like in the picture."
"You're actually sticking up for him?!" she exclaimed.
"No. I'm explaining. Louis sent me the picture, not knowing what happened. It was a big misunderstanding.... Liah," I said. "Niall thought you were at the bar." She paused.
"H-He did?"
"Yeah Liah. I did," Niall inturrupted.
"Niall, I told you to keep your mouth shut!" I screamed.
