For my final night with the Tomlinsons, Lou was taking everyone out to dinner. I frantically searched in my suitcase for something other than jeans, T-shirts, and Chuck Taylors, but by the end of my search, all I had accomplished was throwing everything around the room. I blew out a breath and slid down into the mountain of clothes I had made. As I sulked in my own non-fancy misery, Louis came in and found me and dug me out.
"I can't find anything," I sighed, exhausted from searching.
"It doesn't matter what you wear. You're sexy to me in anything," he said winking and kissing the top of my head.
I smacked him a little, but took the embrace.
"That's not the problem. I'm worried about... acceptableness."
I had already used up all my more tame T-shirts, trying to be a bit more PG.
"You don't have anything?" Lou asked confused.
"Do I look like the kind of girl the owns a dress?"
"Either way I answer this, I'll get smacked."
"The answers no. I don't. But thanks for not answering."
"Alex, wear what you want. You'll be fine.
"You think?"
"I know," he said.
He smiled and left me to change. I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair, studying my options again. I was so focused that I didn't notice when Louis' mum was standing in the doorway behind me, looking at the bombsite I had created.
"Having trouble?" she asked.
I laughed.
"You could say that."
She thought for a miute then gave a smile.
"I might have something for you."
I followed her as she disappeared down the hall and enetered her room. She dug through her closet for a minute, throwing and pushing things aside until she found what she was looking for. She held up a dress.
"Here," she said handing me the black fabric.
I held up the dress in front of me and was suprised by the beauty and simplicity of it.
"Well go try it on," she laughed.
I smiled and went back to the guest room to change.
Holy shit...
The dress fit perfectly. A simple black dress with long sleeves but a short hem and an open back. I slipped on a pair of black heels she had given me and my legs went on for days. I stood in front of the mirror and watched as the line of my hips curved in, out, then back in again. I was... hot.
She knocked lightly then popped her head in the room. A huge smile spread acorss her face when she saw me.
"Absolutely beautiful! You look fantastic!" She looked at me then paused. "One second. Come with me."
Again i followed her, but this time, into the bathroom. She pulled my hair back into an updo and then pulled out a tube of lipstick.
"Have you ever had red lipstick?" she asked.
"No. I've never tried it."
She tutted her tongue and then motioned for me to open my lips. I did.
"Every woman should have a perfect shade of red lipstick."
I smiled a little, but couldn't respond as she put on the colour.
She pulled away when she was done and I looked in the mirror. It was unbelievable. My eyes popped with the contrast of the red and gold, and my skin glowed instead of being an awkward shade between pale and tan.
"Thank you," I whispered. "I know I haven't been... the best, but... thank you."
"i see the way you two look at each other," she said. "And as much as I wanted Lou to have a-" she gave a slight laugh "-traditional girl, I see that you love him. And he loves you. That's all that matters."
I was surprised by the sudden change of heart, but I didn't question it. I smiply smiled a warm thank-you and headed back to my room.
Louis was tugging and adjusting his clothes when I walked in. I stood in the doorframe for a minute, watching him from behind and smiling at his subtle mannerisms. The little movements that made me fall for him in the first place. He saw me in the mirror and gave a slightly embarrassed smile. He held up his tie.
"Help," he said simply.
I laughed and walked over to him.
"Wow," he said, his eyes roaming the tight places in the fabric of the dress. "You look great."
"My eyes are on my face," i warned.
"Sorry." He grinned.
He wasn't sorry...
I took his tie in my hands and tied the knot. I guess I was smiling because Louis asked,
"Why so giddy?"
I pulled the knot through the last time and rested my hands on his chest. He put his hands on my arms. I looked up into his eyes, my smile not fading.
"Things are finally... right."
We pulled up in front of the restraunt and Louis took me by the waist, leading me through the doors. His family walked in front of us, and for the first time this whole trip, I felt like a part of the family. And it felt nice. It felt like when I found Lou. I felt like I wasn't alone anymore.
We sat down at the table and ordered. Everyone immediately started talking and laughing. And you know what? I joined them. I was telling stories and jokes and listeneing to their's as well.
"How do you know so much about music?" one of the girl's asked.
"I had a job at this college radio station for a while. It was great. Probably my dream job if I'm not able to produce. I got to discover a lot of bands and do interviews, but..."
But my parents found out and forced me to quit. When I refused, they paid off the station to shut down my show.
"Well," I tried to finish. "It just didn't work out."
"That sounds like fun," she said smiling.
I was about to tell her a few more stories about the radio station when a couple caught my eye.
"Shit," I said, petrified.
"Language, Alex!" Louis' mom said. "The girls!"
The older ones rolled their eyes while the little ones giggled.
"I'm sorry," I mumbled.
I quickly grabbed Louis' hand and stuttered somthing about free pie. Louis stumbled behind me as I pulled the both of us behind a seperation wall.
"What the hell-"
"My parents are here."
