Sarah walks back into the waiting room and, into the open arms of her father and Beth.
"Okay," questions Mr Rose," what did they say?"
"Nothing yet daddy," explains Sarah," it might take up to 24 hours before they know." He knows this from when Melanie went througn it. But.. "They want to be through and make sure the results are right."
"True, how are.they going to tell you?"
"They will call. So, lets get out of here." They turn and head towards the elevators. Just as Beth pushes the button to summon it, Maggie comes running to them.
"Wait guys! We have Sarah's results." They turn and look at each other, wondering if it is good or bad news," follow me on back." They follow Maggie into an unknown future. The girls holding tight to each others hands. Mr Rose with his glasped tight in front of him.
Maggie leads them into a small conference room with a telephone and a box of tissues on the table. Sarah and Beth sit side by side with Mr Rose to the right. They each take one of Sarah's hands.
"Well," starts Maggie," there is no easy way to say this. We definitely see something that concerns us. We aren't saying it is cancer. We do need to biopsy it, and soon." They all sit in silence for a moment. Finally Mr Rose says,
"Okay. A few questions. What about her lump concerns you? When will you want to do the biopsy? And, when will you have the results?"
"First, a couple of things about the tumor concern us. The fact it is hard, not mobile, the margins aren't even, and lastly, the fact it is there at all at her age. We need to do the biopsy today and will have the results today."
"Sarah," says her daddy," let's get this done."
"Okay," Sarah says through her tears," can Beth come back with me. Please."
"Well, since your Uncle Eric will be doing it, if he has no problem, it should be okay. I will let him know you are ready"
Ready isn't quite the word they would use. But, they all know the wisdom of this. Of getting it done and finding out. Still, it is way to soon when Maggie comes back and takes Sarah and Beth into a small exam room. She leads Sarah to a chair in the middle of it, after she changed back into the gown. Beth sits in one of the chairs to the side and, they both wait on Uncle Eric to come in.
Dr Eric Ables, Beth's daddy's eldest brother, had always wanted to be a doctor. When he was a child he would exam all his pets and, his sometimes willing brother. He never had a doubt what he wanted to do. He knew his childhood dream was sent by God and needs to be used for His glory. So, he specialized in gynecological oncology. It is how he came to be Sarah's doctor.
"Sarah and Beth, I am so sorry this is happening. I will make it as easy as possible and we will find out the results soon. Do you have any questions?"
"Yes," Sarah answers," what exactly are you going to do?"
"I am going to numb the area around the tumor, then, I am going to take a large bore needle and take out a piece of the tumor, which we will put under the microscope. From that, we will determine if we have a problem. But, before any of that, I would like to pray with you."
They all join hands and pray, seeking God's will in the process, His peace over Sarah and James, His wisdom for Eric and all the people that will be working with her.
After the prayer, Eric preformed the procedure. Sarah held tight to Beth's hand. She then gets dressed and starts to wait.
It isn't long before they are all three directed to Uncle Eric's office. He enters and silently sits down. His look told them before he said a word.
"I am so sorry. It is not good news. It is cancer. The tumor is 5 cm. We believe it is stage 2 but, will know more after we take it out. We want to do that soon."
Beth grabbed Sarah's hand as soon as she saw the look on her uncle's face. By the time he is finished, they are in each others arms and her daddy holds them both.
"Will I lose my daughter too!" He cries out after a moment of stunned silence.
"Not if I can help it. Sarah's tumor was discovered way earlier then Melanie's. We have treatments we didn't have then. I have every indication that she will make it." He turns to Sarah. "Sarah, this is going to be a fight but, I believe you can conquer it."
"What is the next step?" She asks.
"I want to put you in the hospital today. We beed to do some tests to determine whether a lumpectomy or mastectomy will be best. Once we get it out, we will know the stage of the cancer and what the right treatment is."
"Okay," Sarah wipes tears off her face," let's go. Time to start kicking cancers butt."
"I will call ahead and get you a room. If y'all want to head that direction, they will be ready for you when you get there." He hugs the girls and shakes James' hand "I promise you that we will give this fight all that we have."
With that, they all walk towards the elevator and into a new reality.
