Josiah gave Beth a ride home that night. At first, they don't speak each lost in our own thoughts.
"How can this be happening to her, to them?"
"I really don't know. I know and believe, that everything bappens for a reason. But, I don't understand this." His voice is full of emotions.
Beth sighs, closes her eyes, and whispers," I am not sure I can handle losing my best friend."
"No. No, none of that. We fight! God doesn't call us to give up. So, we fight as long as He does."
"You are right. Sorry for the moment of self-pity."
"After today, you are more then entitled." He replies as he pulls up in front of her house.
"Thanks Josiah. Not just for the ride but, for being their for Sarah today. I know how much it means to her." She finishes with a grin.
"You don't have to thank me. It is what I would do for any of our group."
"But, it really means a lot to her." Beth emphasizes the 'really' as she climbs out of the car.
"What do you mean?" he calls after her.
"Ask her." She yells back," it is her's to tell. She enters her house, leaving a very confused Josiah behind.
"Hers to tell. Really means a lot to her." Josiah muses over what Beth had said as he drives home. He can't, right then, figure out what she meant.
Sarah has been his friend since kindergarten. He used to chase her around the playground but, he chased a lot of girls around the playground. He ignored her, and every other girl, from the ages of ten to twelve. He noticed her, Beth, and all his other female friends, in a whole new light then. But, none more then any other.
When he accepted Christ at fourteen and, then found out that Sarah and Beth also had, they become more then friends. They are all family, bond by the blood of their Savior. That they remained until this very day.
So, he is confused as he went over what Beth said. He had made it home, took a shower, and was preparing for bed, before it hit him.
He stops in mid brush, slowly lowered the toothbrush and sinks down on the toilet. "She likea me. Sbe really likes me." He thinks in astonishment. She has always been Sarah, his buddy and sister-in-Christ. Could she be more? Should she? Should he even be thinking this while she was going through this? These thought run through his mind as he slowly gets up and finishes brushing his teeth. He has loved Sarah for years but, could he, should he, love her? Really love her?
They, the members of the prayer group, took these questions very seriously. They went out in groups, but, so far, never in couples. They don't date to date. They have vowed not to risk their hearts that way. They only date if they truly intend to have a future with that person.
So, these questions are not flippant. As he climbs into bed, he prays for Sarah and her daddy, for wisdom for her doctors, peace for all that love her. Lastly, the wisdom to know what to do about her feelings for him and, to be honest, his feelings for her.
