Y/N's first day in Paris was already proving itself to be the worst day of her life.
For starters, Y/N woke up late- like, 'a couple of minutes before first period' kind of late. She jumped off her bed and bolted into the closet, throwing on a pair of ripped jeans and a thin red sweater, both accompanied by a pair of sensible sneakers. It was cute and she definitely wanted to make a good first impression but that was the least of her problems.
Why did everything go wrong?
After brushing her hair and teeth, Y/N ran out of the apartment with her breakfast consisting of like, a packet or two of Pop Tarts. Time was running out for her as she ran out the apartment complex and towards her school. Of all days to be late, it had to be that one.
Y/N's next problem was the commute. Had she woken up on time like she was supposed to, she could've just taken a leisurely walk or even a brief bike ride to school. However, since it seemed the Fates despised her, every stoplight she encountered was at a red. By the time she was at the second to last stoplight, she was already late.
Why did everything go wrong?
Nevertheless, Y/N still hurried to get where she needed to be. Upon seeing the wide doors to the school building, she sprinted in, happy to have arrived before it was shut. The combination of a freshly waxed tile floor and Y/N running into the giant courtyard resulted in her crashing into an older, owlish looking man.
Due to his larger build and slightly taller stature, the gentleman was okay. He was, however, immediately annoyed by the young girl's recklessness. The greying man dusted himself off and lightly scowled at Y/N. Y/N was fumbling to find an apology. His stern, amber eyes bore a hole in her brain but he shook his head just a tad bit. "Ms. L/N, if you want to avoid incidents like these from repeating themselves, just arrive on time. I was told that we'd be receiving a new student today. I'm Mr. Damocles, the principal." At that point, Y/N realized it was just for the best to shut up, listen, and follow the lead.
Why did everything go wrong?
Mr. Damocles took Y/N on a brief tour of the school, ending the excursion at her first period class. As soon as they walked in, all eyes were on them. Mr. Damocles was already talking to a tall woman in a lab coat; her science teacher, she assumed. The science teacher, whose name was Ms. Mendeliev, was visibly irritated after being interrupted. The two adults spoke amongst themselves for a bit while Y/N's classmates-to-be stared her down.
Y/N hadn't even realized that Mr. Damocles left till Ms. Mendeliev 'ahem'ed to get Y/N her attention. Once Y/N's attention was on her, Mendeliev met her with a upset frown. "Young lady, next time don't come so late. I don't take to interruptions kindly." It was bad enough that Mendeliev already had a sour face, but the bitterness in her tone made Y/N feel worse. "Everyone else already has a science partner, except..." Mendeliev checked some sort of chart she had on a clipboard. "Mr. Kurtzberg. Nathaniel!"
Upon the loud shout, a boy with bright red hair jumped up from his seat. "I wasn't sleeping!" Everyone's attention shifted from Y/N to the now embarrassed redhead. Mendeliev subtly rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Nathaniel, I'll be pairing you up with Ms. L/N as your science partner."
Electric blue eyes shifted to the girl that stood next to Ms. Mendeliev. Nathaniel went red in the face as he realized he made a fool of himself once again...in front of a new classmate. He waved timidly and sat down quickly, eager to just finish the rest of the class. Y/N was already making her way to her new seat once Mendeliev let her go. She avoided the stares of her classmates by staring at her seat till she got there.
Ms. Mendeliev had resumed the day's lesson and the other students had focused their attention on whatever she was rambling about. Y/N didn't want to further instigate her bad luck and try to make small talk with her new science partner. 'Heaven knows it's not my day today', she thought to herself. She decided to work on the physics problems that had been written on the board.
It wasn't until Y/N heard light snoring beside her that she realized Nathaniel was sleeping. She glanced at him discreetly and caught a glimpse of Mendeliev going around the room, checking her students' work.
Y/N internally panicked. As soon as Ms. Mendeliev turned her back, Y/N tapped Nathaniel's shoulder. The blue eyed boy jumped up with a start, quickly turning to Y/N. She pointed at Mendeliev and then his paper, silently telling him to just play along, for heavens sake! Fortunately, Nathaniel played along perfectly since Mendeliev didn't have any complaints when she checked their assignments. After that, the continued their work in silence till the bell rang, ending second period.
Just as Y/N was getting ready to leave the science classroom, Nathaniel tapped her shoulder. He felt kind of awkward as he tried to find the right words to say. "Hey, Y/N. I just wanted to say thanks for what you did earlier today. You didn't have to do that. You could've just let me get caught but you didn't. I really appreciate it. Thanks." Nathaniel smiled at her before heading out. "I'll see you around?" Y/N grinned and nodded. "Yeah."
Finally something went right.
