I couldn't have been more happy for school to be done with today.
When the finally bell of the day rang out, I all but ran out of the school.
I quickly hopped into my car and drove home.
My home is a cute little two story house with a smallish front yard and a bigger backyard.
The front yard was adorned with healthy green grass and flowers that I've planted. A white picket fence surrounded the yard.
The backyard was big with a couple trees, flowers, healthy green grass, and a huge back deck.
I could hear my dog barking from the backyard as I walked through my front door.
I smiled as I made my way through my living room, past the hallway, and into the kitchen where the back sliding glass door is.
My beautiful blue merle pitbull is only two years old, but she is one of the most loyal dog I've ever had.
She's trained in obedience and even search and rescue.
I slid open the door and she jumped through, jumping up in delight.
"Did you miss me, Koda?" I asked as I petted her head affectionately.
Her full name is Dakota, but I cut it short after a while.
She barked again and ran off.
She came back a few seconds later with one of her toys.
She stopped in front of me and put her butt in the air.
She looked so cute with her floppy ears and natural docked tail.
I took the tennis ball from her and went out to the deck.
I tossed it to the far side of the yard and watched Koda bound after it.
I giggled and went back in.
I found me something to snack on and went upstairs to my bedroom.
•••
Later that night I later in my bed with all the lights off and my laptop in my lap.
I was scrolling through tumblr when Koda started growling at the foot of my bed.
I peer over my laptop and look at Koda who has her bright blue eyes narrowed in on my bedroom door that was closed.
I don't know why, but I can't find it in myself to sleep with the door open, I just can't do it.
"What is it?" I asked her softly.
With a sudden growl, she leaped off my bed and scratched at the door.
Confused, I set my laptop aside and pull the covers back.
I go to the door and press my ear to it, seeing if there was a sound that I just couldn't hear.
I heard nothing but the soft growling coming from Koda.
"Quiet," I told her.
She instantly stopped.
I listened intently for any sounds.
Then I heard it.
It sounded like a window from downstairs being slid open.
I knew it was the one in the hall since I've been meaning to fix that little creaking sound it makes.
My eyes widened and my heart started pounding faster.
I quickly went over to the back corner of my room and grabbed the metal baseball bat I had.
Hey, you never know when someone tries to break in.
I go back to the door and place my hand on the handle.
Koda still stands there, waiting for me to let her go.
I ease the door open with no sound and Koda goes off.
I want to call her back, but she's also a protector.
Since she headed down the stairs, I know the attacker isn't up here.
I tip toe through the hall towards the stairs and creep down them slowly.
The bat was raised, ready to strike if they pop out.
I could hear rustling coming from the kitchen and a soft glow was coming from under the door.
Why isn't Koda doing anything?
I want to call out to her, but don't want to alert the robber.
I don't have anything worth robbing, so why break in?!
I get to the swinging door that leads to the kitchen and place the palm of my hand on it softly.
I gently push on the door, opening it just a crack, and peak in.
I could see someone crouching in front of my fridge, the door open, looking for something inside.
What, did they break in for a late night snack?
I almost giggled at my own 'joke,' but held it back.
I pushed the door open and stepped through, easing it shut behind me.
Koda was sitting next to the robber, waiting patiently.
Why isn't she doing anything?
She looks back at me and her tongue sticks out as she wags her non-existent tail.
I raise the bat higher as I get closer.
The person is silhouetted by the light of the fridge, not letting me see if I know them.
I stand a foot away, close enough to hit them with the bat if needed, and cleared my throat.
They jumped, causing them to hit their head on the inside top of the fridge.
A loud groan of pain came from the intruder and I took a small step back.
"Jesus, was that really necissary?" The person asked.
