Jeremy’s POV
“Hey mom,” I yell out to her after I finished unpacking my clothes. My pack just moved from our town in Colorado to live with my Aunt’s pack. My Aunt Abigail, my dad’s sister, is the Luna so we soon became allies with the Crescent Fire pack. The Crescent Fire pack was being threatened by the Mountain Nightstalkers pack and consequently my pack moved here to help.
“Yes, Jeremy?”
“Can I go out for a run,” I ask her. If I don’t ask permission especially this soon after moving here she’ll go insane trying to find where I went.
“Sure, but be home for dinner. If you’re going to be late mindlink me,” and with her response I start to run down the stairs to go outside. The buildings that my pack are living in right now are both plain white three story buildings that are considered to be the ‘guest houses’ on their property. I go out to the string of trees, take off my clothes and shift. I start walking through the trees, but then I feel a pull to go faster and to turn to the right. I’m about to check in with my wolf, Killian, only to find him prancing around my mind.
I let Killian take control only to have the control pushed right back to me. ‘What’d you do that for,’ I ask him.
‘If you let me in charge, I don’t know what I’ll do. The pull is so strong and I might not be able to control myself.’
‘Do you still want me to follow it Killian?’
‘Of course, you asshole!’
‘Geesh what climbed up yours,’ I ask him before shutting him out. I follow the pull and it leads me to a gravel road that has dust swirling around it. I stay inside the tree line while the pull is still taunting me. I instinctively start to sprint and when the pull finally lets me stop my lungs stop working as well. My heart starts to beat faster until I feel like it’s going to burst out of my chest. What I see is a girl around my age sitting on tractor while I’m assuming her father operates it.
‘Is that -,’ I start to ask Killian when I realize that I blocked him. I start to break down the wall only to hear him chanting, ‘Mate. Mate. Mine.’ over and over again so I guess that answers my question. My wolf wants to howl in response and run up to her, but I know that’s not a good idea. I hunker down to where she can’t see me, but I can watch her. I sit there just staring at my beautiful red-headed mate until she starts to leave and I follow her again. I follow her into a field filled with at least forty cattle and I try to weave between them to see her, but this time I meet her eyes. She starts to freak out a little bit and I back off. ‘Why did you just run away like that,’I hear my wolf yell at me.
‘Killian did you want to freak the poor girl out? It’s obvious that she is a human. If we came out of hiding we would scare her too much.’
‘Fine I guess you’re right, but we’re not letting her out of our sight.’
We continue to follow her and we arrive at a big farmhouse off of the highway. They go inside only to come out not even an hour later to leave again. I mindlink my mother to tell her that I won’t be home for dinner and she questions me. Mom, I’ll explain later. Right now I have something else to do.
I follow them to a house in town, not my brightest idea, and the neighbor dog starts to bark at me. My mate looks around to see what is going on, but to no avail when her father calls her inside. We’ve been waiting outside for almost two hours and my wolf starts to whimper. We’re getting ready to leave without catching another glimpse of her, but then they come out again. ‘These people just won’t stop moving will they,’ I say to Killian.
++~~~++
I kept following them while in wolf form and they pulled into a gas station. Using my sensitive hearing I could hear my mate’s breathing speed up when the door opened to her truck. There is a guy that I haven’t seen before in there with her and I can tell from all the way out here that he’s making her uncomfortable. When he leaves the truck and it looks like my mate is about to start crying I can’t hold Killian back. Killian takes over and starts to go towards her. He howls and it’s not like anything I’ve ever heard before. This startles her and she nearly jumps out of her skin. ‘Look what you did there! You scared our mate,’ I yell at Killian.
‘You saw how much that guy scared her, did you expect me to nothing after seeing that?’
‘Well I figured you would, I just didn’t know what you were going to do and I certainly didn’t think you would just do that.’
‘Let’s keep following her to see if we can find out where she lives.’
++~~~++
I follow her until my wolf tells me to stop. ‘Why?’
‘We can’t keep going like this. Our wolf form can’t take it anymore and it’s really late. If we don’t get home in the next hour Mom is going to lose it on us.’
‘Fine I guess you’re right, but how are we going to find her?’
‘Do you remember that house in town? Well we can figure out who lives there and ask them about her tomorrow.’
‘Okay. That sounds like a solid plan to me.’
++~~~++
“Hey Aunt Abigail,” I ask her the next morning while eating breakfast. “Do you know who lives on the corner of Walnut and 3rd Street in town?”
“Not particularly. What does the house look like?”
“It’s a one story house that kind of looks like a barn because of the red and white paint. There’s an old tree stump outside with a multi-colored rooster statue perched on top.”
“Oh you must be talking about the Johnson’s townhouse,” my uncle Will chimed in.
“Do you know them,” I ask trying to figure out where my mate fits into all this.
“Yeah, I know them pretty well actually; I used to be really good friends with one of their sons.”
“One of their sons? How many do they have?”
“They have three sons and one daughter.”
“Which one were you friends with?”
“I was friends with Richard. Why are you asking about them?”
“Well I went by their house yesterday and I saw a girl who was with, I’m assuming, her father. I was just wondering who they were.”
“Oh well, I don’t know who you saw then.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, the father-daughter thing makes me think of Richard, but he has a lot of nieces and nephews that are extremely close to his age. You could have seen one of their grandkids and a great-grandkid. Why do you want to know so bad?”
“She’s my mate,” I say quietly, but with their sensitive hearing I know they can hear me.
“Okay, have you considered going to them and asking who it was?”
“Yes, but I just wanted some information first. You guys can’t tell my father yet either. I’ll tell him when the time is right.”
“Why can’t we,” my uncle asks.
“TJ doesn’t like it when wolves have humans as mates. In fact, he doesn’t normally like humans at all,” my aunt explains.
“Okay, we won’t tell him, I promise.”
++~~~++
I went over to where I saw my mate last night and knock on the door. I wait for a little while and I didn’t get a response, so I knock again and I see this elderly woman come over to the door as she tells me to come in. I do and then she asks me who I am. “I’m Jeremy from the Crescent Fire pack and I was hoping if I could just take up a minute of your time to ask you a few questions.” I lie to her a little just in case the word gets around that someone came looking for the girl.
“I guess that would be fine. Come and grab a seat in the dining room.” The lady sits down in a blue straight-back chair that’s sitting in front of the TV so I sit down in the chair beside the TV. “What do you want to know?”
“I was just wondering if you would tell me who came to your house last night.”
“Well, one of my grandkids came over with his daughter for a little while. They were gone before my son and his daughter came over though.”
“Well I’m looking for the duo with the girl close to my age with red hair.”
“Josephine? What do you want to do with her?”
“Ma’am I’m assuming that because of the arrangement my pack has with the town that you also know about mates. I do believe that Josephine is my perfect mate and I just wanted to find her.”
“She can’t be your mate. You’re a werewolf,” I was just about to protest when I heard what came out of her mouth next. “She’s not good enough for you. If I were you, I would rej-” the old woman gets cut off when her husband walks into the room.
“You would what Jane,” he asks with steel in his voice.
“I would rejoice that you have such a lovely young mate,” Jane covers her mistake.
‘What is this crazy old lady’s problem? You should be yelling at her for talking about our mate like that!’
“Sir, do you know where I could find Josephine,” I ask hoping he will be more forthcoming.
“She’s in Charlottesville which is where she lives. If she really is your mate and you’re not just trying to weasel your way into her life I will help you find her.”
“Sir, I promise you that I will do everything in my power not to hurt her. I swear to you that she is my mate.” He stares me down for a while after he hears this then he turns around and leaves the room. ‘Way to go asshat! He didn’t believe you and now we’re screwed! We have no way of finding her now! You’ve blown it!’ my wolf keeps yelling at me until the man comes back into the room with a little address book in his hand.
“Her dad’s name is Richard and all of his information is in here. Write it down, tear it out, or take a picture; I don’t care, but there is all the information I can give you.”
I look between him and the book, “Thank you so much, sir.”
“Don’t thank me yet, there’s still a long ways for you to go,” he says handing me the book.
I find Richard’s information inside easily enough and save it all to a new contact in my phone. I hand it back to the man and say thank you once more. He shakes my hand and then I let myself out of the house. ‘I knew you had it in you to finish what needed to be done!’ my wolf tells me.
‘That is complete bull and you know it! Just half an hour ago you were telling me that I failed in 50 million different ways,’ I respond exasperated.
‘Your point being?’
‘Whatever, I don’t want to deal with you right now. Just go away.’
++~~~++
Once I’ve made it back to the pack house I try to find my mom. I’ve looked just about everywhere I can think of before I decide to mindlink her. ‘Mom where are you? I need to talk to you about something and far away from dad. Will you go on a walk with me?’
‘Is this about what happened last night?’
‘Yes.’
‘I’ll meet you at the front gates in five minutes.’
I exit the main packhouse and start towards the gate
when I hear my dad holler at me from somewhere. I look around and I find him hanging out of a window from the guest house that contains all of the major families’ living quarters.
“Yeah, dad,” I question.
“Where have you been all day? We were supposed to have a meeting about what we’re going to do about the Mountain Nightstalkers pack.”
“Shit,” I mutter under my breath. I look back at him and say, “I was helping Will and Abigail check out some of the border patrols.”
“We need to have this meeting soon Jeremy.”
“I know Dad. I’ll come talk to you in an hour or two.”
After hearing my response dad goes back into the building and I continue my walk to the gates. When I get there I see that mom got there before me.
“What did you need to talk about,” my mom immediately asks me.
“Let’s walk for a minute to get some distance between us and dad.”
Not quite understanding mom gave me a weird look before she continued walking.
Once we’re about five minutes away from the house I open with, “Mom I found my mate.”
Mom freezes and then turns to look at me. “Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“Oh my gosh honey! What does she look like? Are you excited? When did you meet her? What’s her name? Where does she live?” Mom grasps my shoulders while bombarding me with questions.
“She’s about 5’3” with auburn hair and beautiful. Yes. I found her last night. Her name is Josephine, and no she does not live here,” I tell her.
“Well, then where does she live?”
“Charlottesville, I think.”
“You think,” she asks with her hands on her hips.
“Well, I didn’t exactly talk to her.”
“And why not? It’s not every day that you get to meet your soulmate.”
“I didn’t get the chance. I found her while I was out on my run. I followed her for a little while. I was in my wolf and she’s human so I couldn’t exactly go talk to her. I would have scared the living daylights out of her; Killian did that all on his own.”
“So all you did was spy on her? How did you find out that she lives in Charlottesville?”
“Like I said, I followed her for a while. I followed her into town where she and her father ate at her grandparents’ house. I continued to follow her after that. When they got to Edgartown and stopped at a gas station a guy who had apparently been following them got into the truck and freaked her out. I don’t know why, but it happened. As they left the gas station I followed them for another half an hour before Killian stopped me. I went back to her grandparents’ house this morning and asked them about who was there last night. The grandmother is a complete bitch though. She was bad mouthing her own granddaughter. Anyway, that’s how I figured out who she is.”
“You said that she’s a human, didn’t you,” she asks. She knows the answer, but just needed to hear it reaffirmed.
“Yes, mom. She’s human.”
“Your father’s not going to like this.”
“I know mom.”
“So, how are we going to sneak around him,” she says with a wink.
++~~~++
Mom and I are in the dining room in the Alpha’s house talking to Uncle Will and Aunt Abigail. “You said that Josephine is your mate,” Will asks me.
“Yes, why?”
“She’s a really nice and smart girl. Richard, her father, was the one that I was friends with.”
“That’s right! You told me that this morning. Is there anyway you might be able to help me get a hold of her or run into her by accident,” I ask him. If he’s friends with her father that could open up so many doors.
“How soon would you like it to happen,” he responds with.
“As soon as possible.”
“Would you mind if you went to her or would she need to come to you?”
“Either way.”
“How much time would you want to spend with her?”
“As much as possible. She is my mate after all.”
Will motions my mom out the door. Will follows her out into the hall leaving Abigail and I by ourselves. “So what do you think is going on out in the hall,” I ask her.
“They’re trying to find a way to meet all of your requests while lying to your father about what you’re doing.”
“Yeah, but what do you think it will be?”
“I honestly have no idea. I know that they’re just trying to make you happy.”
Luckily, we didn’t have much longer to wait. They came back into the room, just after Abbi finished her piece.
“How do you feel about moving,” my Uncle asks me.
“What do you mean,” I ask him completely confused.
“I mean, that you better make a list of what you plan to take with you when you try to woo your girl. I’m going to call Richard in a few minutes and we’ll talk to him on the phone together and we’ll convince him to let you stay with him for a while.”
