LANCE

If it weren't for the thundering footsteps bounding up the stairs, Lance's heart would've leapt right out of his chest the moment his bedroom door burst open. Luckily, growing up in the McClain family had granted him access to be able to identify whose footsteps belonged to whom. So when a breathless Rachel appeared in his doorway, Lance – who was halfway through wearing his sweater – merely glanced over his shoulder.

"Veronica here already?" he asked, smoothing out the fabric.

"Yes," she panted, pointing a forefinger in his direction. "And guess who she brought?"

Lance quickly recalled a conversation they'd both exchanged a few months previously. "A ... girlfriend?"

"You don't wanna believe it,"

"Wait, so our sister has a girlfriend?" Lance asked, astounded. "Do our parents know—"

But Rachel gave him no further chance to finish his question as she strode inside and seized hold of his wrist. She then proceeded to lead him outside and downstairs, where the steady babel of chatters indicated that some of their extended family members had arrived. Laughter broke out in the living room, completing the ambience of a New Year's Eve, but the McClain twins merely passed it.

Rachel paused outside the corridor leading to the kitchen, still clutching Lance's wrist. From here, amidst the muffled sound of music pounding from the speakers outside, they could hear their mum's voice. Lance wanted to peek his head through the doorway, but Rachel threw him a warning look that plainly said Not now!

"...not something that neither of us expected," their mum was saying. "I'd be lying if I say I wasn't shocked."

"Me too," said the voice of their dad. "But as long as you're happy, Veronica, we're happy for you."

Their mum hummed in agreement. "I'm gonna need more details of how you two met,"

"Mami ..."

Their mun chuckled. "Mija, I'm kidding,"

"I hardly doubt that," said their dad.

A choked laughter that indubitably belonged to Veronica followed suit. "Thank you, Mami ... Papi ..."

Lance's chest swelled with pride. If their parents didn't mind Veronica having a girlfriend, then surely him and Rachel coming out to them shouldn't be a problem.

Right?

"Say, what's your name again?" asked their dad.

At this, Rachel put up a finger at Lance, as if to say Wait for it ...

An unfamiliar – yet so familiar – voice replied; "Acxa, sir,"

In his surprise, Lance nearly choked on his own saliva at the response. He was already moving past Rachel to join the conversation, but she grappled with him and steered him away from the kitchen, hissing "Don't be stupid!"

"Wait— Acxa as in the Acxa?" Lance said as soon as they were out of earshot. "From the band? Our sister is dating a band member?"

Rachel's enthusiastic nod confirmed it.

"Man, I gotta tell Keith this—"

"Not now!" she slapped his hand before he could reach his pocket. "Save that for later! We have hosts to welcome."
