I tided around the kitchen, stuffing a bunch of dirty plastic plates into the garbage can. This wasn't my house but just staring at the mess was irritating. Highly doubt after the party Levi's going to have much help cleaning up so I may as well get a little ahead.

People continued to clutter the island with their dirty shit.

I shook my head in frustration. I turned on the kitchen tap, filling the sink with warm soapy water.

"Yo, Emerson."

I nearly cut myself with the knife. "You're not suppose to sneak up on someone holding a knife," I said, looking over my shoulder.

Aaron.

He took along drag from the cigarette he was holding. "Levi wouldn't appreciate havin' to take you to the hospital if you ended up slicing yourself."

I wouldn't be too thrilled about it either. I don't even know if I have health coverage since moving in with Jake and Carol. "Who invited you?" I asked. I can't see Levi extending an invitation for him to come over.

"You only get invited to birthday parties, girl. Parties are extended to everybody."

"I see." My lack of party experience is starting to show. Kids hand out invitations to friends to come to their Dora Explorer themed party.

"You know, he's got a dish machine."

"Huh?"

Aaron took the cigarette bud out of his mouth and motioned to the machine. "Save you some time instead of hand washing. I doubt your perfectly moisturized hands would appreciate washing for hours."

Since when have I become one of those girls who cares about the texture of their hands? "I know what that is, thanks. You can't wash these knifes in the machine or it would ruin them." I learned my lesson the first time I tried to do that.

I was 6 and one of my many household chores was to unload the dishmachine. Keep in mind this was one of those houses where a single lady adopted 3 other children simply to do work for her while she drank and slept all day. So I loaded the machine and something went wrong. The machine started to smoke so the woman came to check on what was happening. She opened the machine and saw the knives in there. She tried to blame the breaking of the machine because of those knives rather than the fact she has not replaced the more than 15 year old thing.

She was one of those do-it-yourself type person who taped a few frayed wires and said it was fixed.

I got whacked on the bottom with a paddle board over and over again.

"The detergent is abrasive. Wears down the sharpiness of it 'em I right?"

"Something like that," I said. "So I saw you with Amber."

"Yea? We're cool."

"Are you two friends?" I asked apprehensively. This was the first time I've seen them together.

"I guess you can say that. " Aaron laughed at me. "Jealous?"

I rolled my eyes, "Curious is more like it." It's not normal for the two of them to talk. Especially two people who Levi and I both have problems with. As far as I know they could be conspiring together and considering Ambers current nut case status, that could be a big problem for me.

Aaron jumped up on the kitchen counter and sat down. He blew out smoke, "Why curious?"

"It's obvious I don't like her." I don't trust her much either.
