Ellie POV

"Are you ready?" says a handsome doctor with an Australian accent. I finish chewing my food, which takes longer than usual, because I have to chew my food more, so I have a smaller chance of coughing up blood again. When I finally swallow, I answer, "Ready? More than ready." I say with a smile. I push my empty tray of food away and grin.

"You're extra happy for a person getting a liver transplant." He says with a half smile.

"As long as I live..." I pause. "I'm ok with it. My mom told me to start seeing the bright side of things, which I almost never do, because of my cancer. So whenever I am not holding on by a thread, to life, I chose to see the bright side of things. But it isn't always that way." I say with a small smile. The doctor chuckles, and says,

"That's something to live by. Your a brave girl and I hope you know that."

My mom also chuckles, and puts a strand of hair behind my ear.

"Oh yes she is."

"I hope you know what the risks are if this transplant." starts the doctor. I stop smiling and I get serious.

"You young lady, have a high risk of..." he pauses and takes a breath. Before he starts talking again, I finish the sentence for him. I know. I have a high risk of dying on the table, because of my cancer and the condition I am in." I say gloomily. "I've been through it all"

I look down at my hands.

All of a sudden something strikes me like lightning. I gasp.

"Is Melissa here? Is she okay?"

My mother answers instead if the doctor.

"Yes she is. Remember? you were in the car crash with her? Poor girl probably filled with guilt. She was with you in the ICU but you were unconscious..." after that her words fade. Car crash? Then it all clicks. The lights, the horns, screaming, and broken glass, it all came to me now.

I felt like crying, but I had to put on a brave face. I was getting a transplant, and I need to stay brave for Mel. Like Mom always said, "Shine bright."

"So I'm guessing it's even more dangerous because my lung collapsed in the car crash?

He nodded.

"Thanks for doing all this for me, doctor..."

"Harris."

He said finishing the sentence for me. I got up and ready for surgery.

As he wheeled me in a wheelchair, down the hall towards the surgical room, I asked him if he would be doing the surgery.

"No. Doctor Young will perform the transplant. Don't worry. She is one of the best in the hospital. I nodded.

"But I will be assisting."

He opened the door to what was probably the surgical room, and dozens of doctor's and nurses were crowded around the surgical table. I got nervous.

"I don't really feel confident, with twelve different people poking around my body" I said.

" Don't worry only six of them will be performing the surgery. The rest will be watching from that window. He points up to a giant screen of glass.

The doctor lifts me up and places me on the table. Before they put me to sleep I waved goodbye to my mom. After all it may be the last time I see her. She smiled and mouthed, "shine bright" and winked. The doctors gave me an oxygen mask and said,

"Breathe deep. And count backwards from ten."

I took a breath and started counting.
"10,9,8,7,6-"
I faded away into a black void that I might not be able to escape.
The inevitable possibility of death.
