Melissa POV
I wake up as the bus hisses to a stop. I see Ellie readying her bag and I do the same. I sleepily stand up and smile at Ellie. I wait for everyone at the front to grab their suitcases. I pull out my phone and check my Facebook. I scroll through the dozens of selfies Ellie posted.

Okay done.Ellie thinks she dosen't look pretty without the wig. So she wears it in public. My opinion is different. Entirely but to her, my opinion about how she looks.
"I think I'm gonna go ahead."
"You can't people are getting their stuff!" I scold at Ellie. She shrugs and disappears. I roll my eyes. She try's to get around a guy that has his suitcase stuck in the rack, and just as she is about to squeeze through, the guy pulls it out with force, causing him to stumble back, knocking Ellie down onto a seat.
"Ow what is wrong with you? watch where you're going you-" Ellie stops dead in mid sentence as he turns around and looks her straight in the eyes.
"Jackson." He says with a smile and he holds out his hand. Cheesy guy, I think.
But of course Ellie will fall for him.
"Ellie." she says dumbly.
Someone taps me on the back.
"Please move up you are holding up the line." Says an old lady as nicely as she can.
"Oh I'm so sorry." I say to her and she waves her hand, and says, "water under the bridge." I grab my luggage and hand motion Ellie to come as I hand a 20 dollar bill to the bus driver. He smiles and gently takes it and says, "God bless you." I smile and climb off. I see Ellie coming off and handing the bus driver a ten dollar bill.
"You are too kind." She climbs off the bus and stares up at the city in amazement.
"So, who's your new friend?" I say elbowing her and winking.
Ellie POV
"Ow what is wrong with you? watch where you're going you-"
He turns around and looks into my eyes and gives me a crooked smile.
"Jackson." he says.
"Ellie." I say dumbly.
"Well Ellie, hope I run into you some time."
I didn't know what to say. I grabbed my luggage and handed the bus driver a ten dollar bill. I climbed off the bus and met Melissa at the stop. I stared at Times Square and gasped. The lights, the advertisements, and the people rushing by. It was all to good to be true.
"So. Who's your new friend? Melissa asks elbowing me and winking.
*************
I tap my foot in the awkward silence in the elevator.
"Floor 28." Says the robotic elevator voice. Two people get off leaving me and Melissa alone in the elevator until floor 43.
I squeal. "I can't believe we are in the Times Square Hyatt! I've always wanted to come!"
"You can thank me for asking the doctors. I asked them three weeks ago and they said they will have to keep us until we got better."
I hugged Melissa, and tried to calm down. I pulled out my inhaler and breathed deep.
"Floor 43." the steel doors opened.
I looked out the window at the beautiful view of the skyscrapers, and the crowded shops. The sun was slowly beginning to hide behind the horizon and I pulled out my phone to take a picture.
Of course I posted it on all the social networks known to mankind.
"TIME TO GO!" Melissa yells at me from her room. I go into mine and quickly change into a pastel pink tank top with a picture of Chicago, and some jeggings. I grabbed my purse and phone and yelled, "I'M READY!"
We crossed a street and my lungs got the best of me. I pulled out my inhaler again and sat down on the cursor a second to rest.
"You okay?" asks Melissa with a concerned look on her face.
"Fine." I say. I pull out my water bottle from my purse, (the doctor told me to ALWAYS carry one with cold water,) and I took a few sips.
I stood up and kept walking until we reached the Empire State Building. I looked up and I could barley even see the top.
We submitted our tickets, and entered the elevator. I squeezed into a corner and looked at my phone for a while until We reached the 86th floor. We had to take an elevator for two more floors which I found stupid. Why can't we Travel up for two more floors.
"Ellie the second elevator won't work. We have to climb the stairs for two more floors." Melissa said all of a sudden.
"What? seriously?" I say outraged.
"Ellie if you can't I would be fine with going back down."
"No I can do this. I didn't come all this way to give up."
"Are you sure? It's going to be-"
"I'm sure" I said walking to the stairwell.
A lot of people were already gone because they didn't want to climb the stairs, so there wasn't that many people going up.
I looked up, and took a deep breath. I took out my inhaler and kept it in my hand.
"Remember, I'm right behind you." Says Melissa reassuringly. I take the first step. After a few moments I take the second one, then the third, then the fourth and the fifth. I stop to catch my breath, as I see a young girl running up the stairs. I wish I could run like that, but those days are just memories by now. I take another deep breath and I climb three more steps. I take a breath of my inhaler. I take five more steps, and that's when my lungs started burning.
I fought it. I kept slowly climbing. Melissa looked uncomfortable but I looked away. I climbed three more steps, and the burning got worse. I looked up and saw that there were seven more steps to go. I could do this. I started coughing as I climbed more and more. I took a breath of my inhaler again and I took the last two steps.
I sat down and tried to catch my breath. The fire in my lungs faded and I slowly stood up. Melissa was crying. She hugged me and laughed.
"I knew you could do it."
I snapped a picture of me and Melissa above the amazing view. I could see, the Statue of Liberty, that only looked like an action figure from here, I saw Ellis Island, and the Hudson River.
I took three more pictures of just the city. I felt like I was standing above a Lego city replica.
I watched as the lights of the city night shined at me.
"The nights still young, what should we do?" I asked Melissa.
