Jackson POV
I tap my fingers against the wheel as a speed through the highway. A lot of thoughts are racing through my head as I drive. What am I going to say? How will I confront her?I certainly won't be angry. I just don't know how I will ask. I should do it at dinner. Not the best conversation starter, but I think it's the right time. I check my watch. It's around 5:30. I still have another half an hour until I get back to the hotel. So I decide to take my mind off of the whole cancer issue, and I turn on the radio. It makes me feel better.
•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•I stop the car and take the key out. It is in it's parking spot 3 blocks from the hotel. I come out of the car and shut the door. I start walking towards the hotel, when the cancer issue pops back into my mind. Not the Ellie one, mine. I'm nervous.
I got the results of my PET scan and my in an envelope but I'm too nervous to open it. I stop walking and decide to open it. I lean against the side of a building and slip the envelope out of my back pocket.
Here it is. The white battered envelope has my whole life in it, packed into a piece of paper.
I slowly rip open the the flap of the envelope. As soon as I finish I pull out the piece of paper and take a deep breath. I slowly unfold it and skim through most of it. I sigh in relief as I see that I'm cancer free. I feel like I'm about to scream.
The hotel is just about a block away. I start to run towards the hotel and I just burst through the door like a maniac. Because I can. I go up the elevator to my floor and room. I calm down as I open the door.Ellie POV
The door clicks open. Its Jackson. I keep skimming through photos on Facebook as Jackson casually walks in.
He's up to something. But I'm not going to ask. He clears his throat. I look up from my phone. He's holding a white envelope and a brown paper bag. He throws his keys on the table and sets everything down. He sits next to me.
"Great news I don't have cancer!" He says."That's great!" I give him a hug.
He pulls me into a small kiss I pull away."What's wrong?" He asks with concern.
"Um nothing. It can wait." I give a sad smile.
"Okay. Let's have dinner. I got chinese."
"Great."
I was happy for a millisecond that Jackson didn't have to suffer what I did. But my jealousy took over.
I quietly set the table with Jackson and I sat down in one of the chairs. We opened containers. I poured some Mongolian beef, white rice, and noodles in my plate. I started eating.
Jackson clears his throat.
"Ellie I've been meaning to ask you something."
"Mm yeah?" I say in between bites. This food is delicious."Do you have cancer?"?he blurts out.
I almost choke on my food and I drop my fork. It clatters onto my plate."What?"
"Do you have cancer?" He repeated.
"Jackson how did you-"
He cuts me off. "I looked inside your purse."
"You had no right to do that do you know how-"
"You made me get your phone and I did. I saw the bag of drugs in your purse."
I think for a moment. Emotions swirling around my head creating a tornado. I start breathing hard.
No. Ellie you are going to get yourself together and tell him. It's time for the truth."Yes. I have cancer. For 4 years already. Lung cancer. Thats why I have the inhaler, and the drugs. I got diagnosed when I was twelve. I had chest pains and shortness of breath and my parents took me to the hospital one night because I stopped breathing. The doctors gave me a PET scan and they found tumors growing on my lungs. It didn't metastasize just yet. They gave me chemo and a lot of other drugs. I lost my hair. I had to watch my own hair fall out. After a while am in remission but my lungs are still bad."
Jackson looked down quietly.
"Oh." He got up and pulled me into a hug. I started crying. It was really hard to talk about it.
"Why don't we go to bed?" Jackson says.
"That sounds good." I say, and wipe away a tear.
