Ellie POV
"One chocolate frappuchino with two shots of hazel nut please." I say to the clerk at Starbucks. He types something into the cash register, and says, "Anything else?"
"No thanks. That'll be it."
"Five ninety-nine please,"
I dig around in my purse for my wallet and pull out a crisp dollar bill, and a wrinkly five dollar bill.
I hand it to him as he pull out my change from the cash register and exchanges it for my money. He hands me a penny and I put it into the tips container. Not much of a help, but it still makes a difference. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday it will make a difference. My phone rings.
Melissa.
I pick up.
"What do you want? I left you a note." I said really annoyed.
"I'm sorry I just wanted to apolo-"
"Save it. I know you meant it, and I have realized that its true. So please stop feeling sorry for me and move on with life. And it's not like I'm planning on running away. I don't have anywhere to go." I feel her sigh with relief.
"I'm still sorry." She said and sniffled.
"Virtual hug?" I asked. It was our thing when we got in a fight, and apologized over the phone.
"Virtual hug." She said.
"Okay. I will be back soon. Bye."
"Bye."
I ended the call and waited for my drink.
I looked at my Facebook status, and I have a follower request. Just as I look to see who it is, another person holding hot coffee, and texting, bumped into me spilling his coffee all over me. I gasp and look up at the person.
Jackson.
Yup know I know. He is the guy that requested to follow me. I wonder how he found me.
I wipe off my phone.
"Are you stalking me?" I ask narrowing my eyes.
"No I just felt like getting a Starbucks since it's right across the street." he said pointing at the Hyatt.
"You're kidding right?"
"Umm why would I be kidding?"
"Because that's where my hotel is."
"Nah I was just joking with you. But I am at the Marriott on the Times Square."
"Oh wow that one is really expensive."
"Only on New Year's Eve." He said and smiled.
"Sit." he gestured with his hand.
I looked at the time on my phone. 9:03. I promised Melissa that I would be back by nine, but I guess I could run a little late. I texted Melissa.
Coffe spilled had to get a new one be back in fifteen minutes at the least.
I hated lying, but if I told her I was hanging out with a guy she would make fun of me until the day I died. I sat down and took a sip from my drink.
"So tell me about yourself."
Jackson says urgently.
"Um." I bite my lip. I don't want to tell him I have cancer. He might just ditch me or feel really sympathetic and I hate sympathy. To some people sympathy might be comforting, but You should live life to the fullest. Treasure every moment. Especially when you know you are going to die. Also, people treat you differently when they find out something sad about you. But I say no. Everybody is and equal and everybody should be treated equally.
"Well as you know my name is Ellie, as you already know, i'm sixteen years old, my favorite color is cream blue and pastel pink, I love icecream, and my motto is 'be the star that shines bright'" I take another sip. How about you.
"The name is Jackson, I love football, I'm 18 years old, and in freshman year of college here at NYU."
"Oh my gosh! NYU? So you live here?" I say.
He laughed. "
What's so funny?" I ask.
"I don't go to college here, but My mom does live here."
"Then where do you go to college?
"University of Chicago."
"Oh that's so cool! I went to Chicago with my mom once before I-" I stopped myself before it was too late.
"Before you what?" said Jackson expectantly.
"Umm before I came here..." I said nervously. At least he didn't know me well enough to recognize I was lying."
"Oh cool. Two big cities in a row."
"Umm Jackson I have to go... My friend is texting me because there is an emergency." I said picking up my coat and purse.
"But-"
"Really sorry!"
I rushed out of the building quickly, and threw my empty cup into a nearby trash can and walked out into the crowded streets.
