LONG AGO, IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY — if Middle of Nowhere, Indiana can be referred to as such — a baby is born with a miracle. This miracle is not the ancient ability to wield the Force, nor is it some formidable legacy her ancestors have built upon for centuries. Kate Hopper's miracle is being left in a town where nothing ever happens.
Left. What an enigmatic little detail; a dark blot of black ink staining the pages of her life, which would otherwise be written in sparkly pink pen. It's a silly, one-syllable word with a daunting weight the girl has carried since she was able to understand its meaning.
She's pictured the story ad nauseam, played it like an Old Hollywood film in the silver screen of her mind. It's a black-and-white feature, with the harmonious clicks of a projector right behind it, most preferably starring Gregory Peck and Vivien Leigh — a couple of pretty faces with expressive eyes that always seem to swim with a certain weight of sorrow. It's a harrowing tale of star-crossed lovers, a woman scorned, and a child forced to take the brunt of it all.
