KATE WASN'T SURE HOW LONG she'd been asleep, but she knew it hadn't been for long. The rest of the group surely would've found her by now. And even if they hadn't, the monster would've had Starcourt torn apart. And from what Kate could see, the mall was still standing. She couldn't hear any aggressively loud footsteps around her either, which told her it wasn't close. Yet.
She groaned as she sat up. Her abdomen felt almost sore; there was no doubt a wide bruise had formed along the skin of her stomach. And her head was pounding, too, like her skull had been completely busted open. Kate brought her fingers up to the back of her head, wincing as she touched the skin there. Thankfully, it wasn't bleeding.
Max and Mike still hadn't woken up. Kate practically crawled over to the two kids, shaking them furiously.
"Max. Max," she rasped. "Wake up. Max."
The blonde brought her hand to the girl's neck, feeling a bit better upon feeling the slow beat of her pulse. She then went over to Mike, who was quite literally snoring. Kate tried to wake him up, too. But, of course, that didn't work either.
"Fuck. Fuck."
Kate pretended not to feel any pain as she stumbled down the hallway. The flickering lights did nothing for her raging headache, but she pretended not to feel that either. She leaned against the wall to keep her balance as she made her way to the main area of Starcourt Mall. Surely, that's where Billy had taken El.
Her pace quickened despite the distant feeling of wanting to completely pass out. She walked down a flight of stairs, nearly toppling down each one of them. She slammed open a set metal double doors that led her right next to Scoops Ahoy.
The neon lights of the signs above each store lit up the mall in flickering red, blue, and yellow hues. Kate squinted her eyes to focus her vision, finding Billy on his knees beside El's limp body. He seemed to be whispering something in her ear, something to make her suddenly stir herself awake.
