EVERYONE JUMPED AT THE SOUND of Kate's supercomm going off. The voice was muffled, as the device was deep inside her zipped-up bag. She quickly retrieved the walkie-talkie as Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Eleven gathered around her.
"Kate? Are you there?" Jim's voice crackled through the speaker. "Kate, we need you answer."
"Is that your dad?" Lucas asked.
"This is an emergency, Kate. Do you copy?" he asked, before stressing again. "Kate, do you copy?"
"Okay, this is really weird," Dustin trembled.
"Don't answer," Mike urged.
"It's her dad. He said it's an emergency."
"What if it's a trick?" the boy quavered. "What if the bad people got to him? What if they're forcing him to say this?"
"I need you to answer," her dad stressed again.
"He wouldn't do that," Kate shook her head. "He'd die before the bad men forced him to do anything."
Dustin shook his head. "It's like Lando Calrissian. Don't answer."
"We need to know that you're there, Kate," Jim spoke again. "We know you're in trouble, and we know about the girl. We can protect all of you, but you gotta pick up."
Four pairs of eyes were locked on Kate at his words. "I didn't tell him, I promise."
"Are you there? Do you copy?"
The five of them stayed in their spot as the supercomm went quiet. Kate looked at each of them, trying to figure out what was best for the party. She was met with several no's; Lucas was the only one who thought she needed to answer. But Kate knew her father, and knew he wouldn't do anything that would potentially put her in danger. She picked up the device and pressed the button on the side. "I copy..."
"Catherine?" her dad asked.
"Yeah," she nodded though her dad obviously couldn't see. "I'm here. We're here."
