KATE APPLIED HER PINK LIPGLOSS in the small mirror hanging in her locker. The applicator glided softly over her lips, but almost ended up on her cheek as Tommy 'accidentally' bumped into her. She turned to face the brunette, who stood alongside Carol and Steve.

"Do that again, Thomas, and I'll kill you," Catherine scolded half-jokingly. She turned back to her locker, taking the books she needed for class and putting back the ones she didn't.

"You're about as intimidating as a piece of fuzz, Katie," Tommy smirked, leaning against the wall of lockers beside her. He stood a bit closer than what would normally be acceptable from a man with a girlfriend. From the corner of her eye, Kate saw Carol frown slightly and cuddle further into Tommy's side.

"You're funny, you know that?" The blonde responded sarcastically to his comment.

The other boy was about to respond, before Steve interrupted him. He stood on the other side of Kate, ultimately dragging her attention away from Tommy and to him.

"Anyway," he started, flicking a strand of the blonde's hair, making sure that she kept his attention on him – and not the boy on the other side of her, who was basically cheating on his girlfriend, in front of his girlfriend. "My parents are gonna be gone all night tonight, so you know what that means–"

Kate cut him off with a sigh. "I have to babysit tonight."

"You've been babysitting them since they were in second grade," Carol commented. "Surely, they could understand you can't make it one time."

It wasn't so much that she couldn't do that, as much as she just didn't want to. She loved Steve, of course, but could only tolerate Carol and Tommy in twenty minute intervals. But how do you tell someone you'd rather be at the arcade with middle schoolers, than be drinking your weight in alcohol in Steve's pool?

Kate opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by Carol.

"If the next words out of your mouth aren't 'Of course guys, I'd love to–" the girl mocked in a high-pitched voice that sounded nothing like Kate. "–Then don't even speak."
