KATE SWORE IT HAD NEVER rained so hard in Hawkins, Indiana. The stormy weather came so suddenly that the swimmers of the community pool were fleeing to their cars or some sort of shelter from the rain. And while Kate wasn't expecting the downpour, she certainly didn't mind it. It meant she got an impromptu break from work, so she definitely wasn't going to complain about that.

She spent her time in the break room by herself, listening to the crackly radio and leisurely eating from a bag of chips. Her head resting on her hand, and she felt herself slowly dosing off before the distant shout of her name startled her.

"Kate?" Adam called out. "Are this your kids?"

With furrowed brows she exited the back room and walked the short distance to the front counter. There, she found El and Max in red and yellow rain coats.

"What are you guys doing here?" the blonde asked them.

"We found this," the brunette responded, showing her a red, bedazzled fanny pack with the lifeguard logo on it.

"Does it belong to anybody here?" Max asked.

"Yeah, it's Heather's," Kate nodded, still slightly confused. "She wasn't here today."

She watched as the younger girls shared a look before they walked to the bulletin board on the opposite wall. It seemed Adam and Zoe were too caught up in themselves to notice them rip Heather's polaroid from the wall, but Kate saw.

"I'm taking off early," she muttered before following them into the showers. Max was turning on each one in every stall as El was covering swim goggles with heavy-duty duct tape that she definitely stole from the utility closet.

"What's going on?" the older girl wondered.

"Something's wrong with Heather," Max said. "We think she's in trouble."

"What?"

"I saw her. She needs our help," El said quietly, before placing the girl's picture on the floor in front of her and putting on the goggles.
