KATE WOKE UP TO AN empty bed. She groaned as her eyes found the sunlight that peeked through the curtains. Her eyes roamed to the alarm clock on the beside table, finding that she'd woken up a lot later than usual – a lot later. She sat up immediately, walking towards the bathroom connected to Steve's room. She could hear the shower running; it would only make sense for him to be there.
She opened the door, and Steve poked his head out from behind the pale yellow shower curtain. His hair was covered in soapy suds. "What?"
"We're late," she chided. "Why didn't you wake me up?"
"You didn't have a good day yesterday and you didn't sleep well last night," he shrugged before ducking under the shower head to rinse out the soap. "I thought we could just skip."
"What?" she asked as he peeked his head back out.
"You were tossing and turning all night, and you kept whimpering or something. You stopped around 5 a.m., so I just let you sleep."
She nodded slowly as she grabbed her toothbrush, the one she always kept over at Steve's for when she spent the night. As she covered the bristles with toothpaste, Steve announced: "But I do have to go to basketball practice later. Coach will kick my ass if I'm not there."
Kate nodded again, even though she knew Steve couldn't see her anymore. Going with him to basketball practice meant seeing Billy again. And she'd be lying if she said she didn't miss him, at least a little bit.
The girl was truly prepared to not give him the time of day. She wanted to play hard to get – if he really wanted her, he'd try to get her. However, Kate was in desperate need of some sort of validation. After the yelling match with her dad the night prior, and the fight with Steve that she was still slowly recovering from, Kate needed some form attention. And there was only one place she was certain she'd get it from.
She watched from the bleachers as the boys played shirts and skins. Steve was head captain of one time, while Billy was the shirtless head captain of the other. The blonde boy had been kicking Steve's ass the entire game, and although the brunette had grown pretty exhausted, he still put up a good fight.
