The sun tickled your face as you woke from you slumber. As you woke up, your father pulled back the cloth door. "Dear daughter. You must rise and fetch a pail of water." Your father told you, and you obediently nodded and put on your plainly colored tunic. On your way out the door, you grabbed the empty pail of water and ran out. When you were far enough from the house, you started to walk to the well. Being a shepherd's daughter in New Zealand, was not easy work. Since your mother died when you were around five years old, you had to learn how to do the chores around the house. At your respective age, you could be considered the perfect wife, if your father will marry you off. Apparently, your father can't take care of himself and needs a woman in the house, to look after him. As you slowly walked to the stone well, you were blocked by a very large group of sheep. After a good hour, you watched the shepherd pass you. He was absolutely handsome, with curly chestnut hair and hypnotizing green eyes. As the herd passed, you continued on the dirt trail. As you walked, you thought about the handsome brunette you passed, on the road. 'He was so handsome, but I would have remembered him. Wouldn't I? I don't remember him at all. Maybe he's new, or he's a local and I never met him. One of the two, I guess. Oh, I'll try to bump into him again on my way back.' You thought.
Once you filled the pail with water, you slowly made your way back to the spot, but the mysterious man was no where to be seen. You sadly shrugged it off and continued to walk home. As you lifted the cloth door, you placed the pail down near the small stove and started preparing dinner. Your father came in and informed you that you and he were housing a guest for the night.
"But father, how can we support someone tonight. We barely have enough for both of us." Your father was taken back, from your statement, but then quickly brushed it away.
"My dear daughter, our guest is here to help me with the work, so please be pleasant for him." Your father commanded, in a timid voice. You agreed, but wasn't really happy about it. 'How are we supposed to support this house, if we don't have enough money? Father has hired help before, but it has never been a serious success. I worry for him sometimes.' With those thoughts in mind, you drifted asleep.
The next morning, you washed your face then got ready for the busy day. Your father left a note that said he was going to retrieve his guest, and asked you to clean anywhere you could. You did as the note said and cleaned around the small shack, you call a house. Right when you got done, your father entered, along with the man from yesterday, except he had more expensive clothes on. 'Why would he except the apprenticeship if he was rich before?' You both stared at each other until your father spoke up.
"New Zealand? This is my daughter (Y/N). Her mother died when she was young, so she takes care of the house." You were officially confused. This guy's name is New Zealand? "(Y/N)? This is your country New Zealand, so be pleasant." You were stunned then snapped out of it.
"Yes father."
"Now, shall we sheer the sheep?" Your father asked the man beside him. New Zealand nodded and lead the way to the field. You did other chores all day and made a nice dinner for your guest. Once dinner was concluded, you went to sleep.
----------------------------
After several weeks, you had grown more attached to your guest. New Zealand was very upbeat and tranquil. He told you stories about things that happened through his very long life. Even though he told you he didn't like these stories a lot, you completely fell in love with them. Slowly, you started to fall in love with the country named New Zealand. Unfortunately, you thought New Zealand would never return the feelings you were giving.
"Goodness this pail is so heavy!" It felt as if tons of rocks were put in the container, but it was only your worsening state. During the weeks with New Zealand, you started to catch a dangerous disease, that were passed from the English Men, Graveyard Cough. It started to ravage your weak lungs and you knew, you were not going to live long. As you tried to lift the pail again, a hand snatched the pail away. It was New Zealand!
"I'll help you (Y/N)." He said with a little smile. You muttered a thank you, then walked back home with him beside you. As you walked you stopped and looked at your feet. New Zealand stopped and looked back at you. You dropped to your knees and New Zealand rushed over to your side. Horrible hacking fits made their way out of your mouth. He leaned you against him and with your final breath you said, "I love you."
