I actually got the idea of this oneshot from the Disney movie Mulan and from the novel Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte. Please enjoy!

(F/N)- Father's Name

Being a woman in Ancient Rome was not easy. In fact, it was down right frustrating and annoying. You came from a modest family, and in all honesty you liked it that way. You lived in a small estate with your father, mother, and younger brother. It was a simple, happy life you had, until you reached the age to marry. Everything went down hill from there. Even though you came from a humble family, many men asked for your hand in marriage. Every time, your answer was no. Why? Because it was pointless. Marrying someone you don't know was completely out of the question. You couldn't help, but feel that your only reason on this earth, was to look pretty, have kids, and take care of a house. This was a terrible thought! And when you thought things couldn't get worse, a real terror was brewing over the mountains.

---------------------

"Please (Y/N), you need to get married. You are a beautiful young lady, that any man would want to marry. Just get married for your dear, old father." Your father pleaded. At this point he was desperate.

"I told you before father, I don't want to get married! I want to find my own way, without a man by my side." You exclaimed, louder then you intended. Your father blinked once or twice, before he shot back at you.

"Ha, like you'll get anywhere without a man. (Y/N) be reasonable. You can't go anywhere without a husband and that is final." You father shot. There was a long moment of silence, that was not intended. Sitting up, from the cushion, you made your way back to your room. As you walked to your room, you made your way into the small atrium instead. You sat by a pool of water, and looked longingly into it. Your peace was interrupted, by banging on the main door. In a hurry, you opened the door to find soldiers, generals, horses, weapon, and the scent of war. You called to your father, and once he made his way toward the door, he looked at everyone of the men.

"(F/N), it's been a while huh?" The knocker, of the door, exclaimed to his old friend. You didn't know who it was, but you knew they were allies. The same man, after saying his hellos to your father, looked over at your shy figure. He then wolf whistled, as he stared at you.

"Man, you have a beautiful daughter (F/N). What's her name?" He asked.

"Her name is (Y/N). My oldest and only daughter ." Your father answered, before asking the general a question, "What is the reason for this visit?"

"Well, war has been threatening our empire down in the land, below the Mediterranean Sea. The Council wants you and all of us to leave tomorrow. Here is the real message from them. Tomorrow, meet us at that tavern we all tried to sneak into when we were boys." With that they left. Your father walked back into the house, and you followed him closely.

"Father, you can't go! The medic said you can't run and definitely not fit for battle! Please father! What will mother and brother say! Be reasonable-" You begged, before you were cut off.

"Foolish child! I am fine! This is a act of duty, that can not be turned down so inappropriately! Leave me be." Your father yelled, before storming off. What was the reason for this outburst!? Maybe your father knows he can't go, but wants to! He'll surely be killed if you don't stop him! Maybe, you can talk with him once more, or bribe him? No, you had to take his place. So that night, when everyone was asleep, you took your father's armor, horse, weapons, and bag. When everything was collected, you rode off. When you reached the tavern, you took your leave with the other soldiers. After many days, you made it to the land underneath the Mediterranean. There was nothing much to say about it, but it was still exciting. There was a camp with hot food, drinks for everyone, and tents, that were set up everywhere! It was a place that made you wonder, if we were really at war. All the fun subsided, when you were called to a Commander's tent. In fear, you made your way to a large tent. When you made it in, you saw a large golden desk, with tall man sitting in the chair belonging to it. He was laughing, with a dozen of empty wine bottles, meaning he was most likely drunk.

"Commander!" You shouted, in a masculine voice, that matched your father's perfectly. The man before you stopped laughing and looked at you. You could smell the liquor imitate from the drunken man.

"I'M not a Commander... I am Roman Empire!!" He wailed, like the drunk man he is. At that moment another man came in.

"Rome! Get out of my chair!" The mystery man yelled. You guessed he was the real Commander, but that made you wonder who the drunken man was. Then it hit you. "Commander! Did you just say his name was Rome?" You asked. You Commander nodded and made his way over to Rome. The Commander put him on the floor, and sat down in his chair. After a good hour he told you your father's assignment, then you left.

After many days and nights you started to fall in love, with the Empire, but you couldn't be to obvious about you liking him.

Let's say the battle didn't go well... Many of the men were slaughtered and slain. The battle was a complete failure. And the worse of it all, you were injured  yourself. A spear from the battle penetrated your stomach, while trying to protect Roman Empire. When they found you were alive, you were brought to a separate medic tent. There they found out you were a girl. Rome was surprised to learn about your sex. You were embarrassed that they learned your secret. Rome told everyone to wait outside. They followed his orders, and then it was you and him.

"Why?" He asked. You widened your eyes when he asked that. "Why did you do it?"

"My father was ordered to join you in this battle. He was ill and sickly. I couldn't let him fight, with his problem, so I took his place." You answered, rather weakly. He stared at you with hints of disappointment and pain in his eyes.

"You are illegally here, for barely any reason."  You looked done ashamed at what you done, until he spoke again. "So I will fill in for you, but in return, you have to go home and never speak of this to anyone." He spoke, with confidence, as he lifted your chin to look at him. You immediately stood to your feet and slapped his hand away.

"Do you think I can leave to become nothing to you? Do you think I am a machine, without feelings? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you-and fully as much heart! If the Gods had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of customs and traditions. It is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at the God's feet, equal as we are!" You exclaimed, on the brink of tears.

"As we are..." Rome softly said, as he walked over to you, "If what you say is true, then I will fill in for you if you marry me."

"Y-yes."
