Chapter 12

"Wow." Says Corey. We all sigh as we lay on the beach watching the sunset over the water.

I become so relaxed that I ultimately fell asleep.

"Kendall." I hear someone whispering straight into my ear. My eyes open quickly and I'm still on the beach. I turn my head to where I heard the whisper and can hardly see Adriana laying next to me. It's still dark out but I can see the whites of her eyes from the light of the moon.

"Adriana?" I ask, rubbing my eyes, trying not to get sand in them. "What's wrong?"

I look around and the only other person on the beach with us is Jake.

"I need to go to the bathroom but it's dark and I'm too scared to get up." She whispers.

"Adriana the door is literally right behind us." I look up and am surprised that I didn't hit my head on the porch.

"Please Kendall can you go with me?" She pleads.

I groan. "Fine." I say. I stand up with her, brushing off all the sand.

We go inside and she uses the bathroom while I stand outside the door.

While waiting for Adriana I hear multiple dings from someone's phone in the kitchen.

What time is it? Who's getting texts at the time? I walk into the kitchen and see a lit up phone screen sitting on the counter plugged into the wall.

I can't help but peak over and look. It looks like Colby's phone, and he has 14 text messages from someone named Riley.

I wonder if Riley is his girlfriend. Or maybe someone else he cheated with. Either way, she's sending a lot of texts and even though I can't see what they say I have a feeling they're not good.

"Kendall?" I whip around and Adriana is walking over to me. "What are you doing?"

She looks down at the phone in my hands and looks up back at me. "Who's phone is this?"

"I think it's Colby's." I say. "I heard him getting texts and when I looked I saw he was getting messages from someone named Riley."

"First of all, why were you looking at his phone?" She asks.

"Dude it kept ringing and 5 am! I was curious!" I whispered a little too loudly and Adriana shushes me. "Sorry."

"Okay well put it down, let's go to bed." She says. She starts walking over to the couch.

"You're not going back outside?" I ask.

"No way now that I'm inside I'm sleeping on something more comfy than the sand." She say.

"What about Jake? We can't leave him out there alone." I say.

"Well then you go outside and sleep." She shrugs her shoulders and plops on the couch.

I shake my head and start to open the back door again.

"Thanks for coming inside with me." She smiles and I nod my head.

"Whatever scaredy cat." I close the door and lay back on my towel next to Jake.

I thought i was being as quiet as I could but all of a sudden I heard a voice.

"Who's that?" Jake whispers. He lifts his head up towards me.

"It's Kendall." I say.

"What are you doing? Why am I outside?" He asks.

"We fell asleep out here." I reply. He sits up and so do I.

"What time is it?" He asks.

"It's 5am." I reply. It's starting to get a little more light outside and so I could see Jake a little more clearly now.

At least I thought it was Jake.

"Colby?" I squint my eyes through the dark and realize it is him indeed.

"Yeah?" I can see him squinting too.

"I thought you were Jake this whole time." I sigh.

"You sound disappointed. Plus why would you think I was Jake, we don't even look alike." He says.

I pretended not to listen to the disappointment part and move on. "It was dark I couldn't really see clearly."

"Hmm." He says. "Where is everyone else?"

"Inside I think." I reply. "I know Adriana is I'm not as sure for the others."

Colby and I start talking for a little while, just normally chatting like friends, when the sun starts to rise.

"Oh yes the sunrise!" I say in excitement. "I'm never up early enough to see a sunrise."

"Sometimes I am." Colby says.

"Why?" I laugh. I can't imagine him being the type to wake up early.

"Sam and I make exploring YouTube videos and most times we're up all night so we see the sunrise." He says.

"Exploring videos?" I ask for clarification.

"We explore haunted places or go to abandoned buildings and stuff." He says. "Jake and Corey have come with us for some of them."

"That's pretty cool." I reply.

"Yeah we were surprised you guys didn't recognize us." He says.

"Are you guys popular or something?" I ask looking at him.

"I mean kind of." He smiles.

"I'm taking that as a yes, so you guys are social media famous and we had no idea." I laugh a little.

"I guess." He laughs too, and we enjoy the sunset.
