Jack's POV
I had been sitting in the waiting room for what seemed like forever, but it had only been two hours. Mark had taken Cheryl's phone and called Melody's dad and sister, both of which came as fast as they could. I could do nothing but stare at the floor, waiting for any news. Did she make it? Did she... not? If she made it, will she walk again? Will she remember anything? Will she remember me?
"Jack," A voice pulled me out of my horrid thoughts. I looked up and saw Mark.
"She's going to be fine. She's a strong girl, she'll pull through."
"But what if she doesn't?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"She will. Trust me. Melody isn't going anywhere. She's in surgery right now fighting for her life. Fighting to see you again. I know it in my gut."
"Mark, I don't know what I'll do if she doesn't make it. And it's not just now either. I don't know what I'll do when she dies, be it now or in 60 years. I need her." Mark hugged me and I cried for the millionth time. What if she doesn't make it?
"Sean?" A new, broken voice called out. I looked over to Cheryl's direction.
"I'm so sorry. She took the bullet for me, she pushed me out of the way and now... I could be the cause of my angel being taken out of the world. She's saved me twice now. Once at the beginning of her life, and now and the possible end of it. And I'm so sorry I might have just taken her from you. I know she loves you so much."
"Cheryl, it's not your fault. It's the gunman's fault. He shot her, not you," I said.
"She's been my best friend for so long. And she never would have been outside if I hadn't texted her," She whispered.
"Is the family of Melody Lupine present?" A male nurse asked.
"Yes," We all said at once.
"Can I speak to her fiance?"
"That's me," I said, my voice wavering. I followed the nurse to a quieter location.
"The good news is she survived. The bad news is she sustained a lot of blood loss. We gave her a transfusion, but she may not wake up for a while. She also suffered major damage to her internal track. She may have trouble eating for a few months. You can go visit her, but only take a few people in at once."
"Ok, thank you," I said, tears still flowing.
"What did the nurse say?" Cheryl asked, hope flooding her eyes for the first time.
"She made it," I said, shocked but so happy," But only a few people can go in at a time."
"Jack, you and her family go in first and we'll go in later," Mark said, being the voice of reason in all this. So that's what we did; Melody's family and I went in first, but they left after a while so they could rent a hotel room since they had only come down to Boston for a day trip. Mark, Bob, and Wade along with Amy, Mandy, and Molly came in for a while, but only Mark and Amy stayed with me until visitor hours were over. I had been allowed to stay with Melody, but I couldn't bare to move my head from her warm body; it was the only thing bringing me any comfort, the knowledge that she'd wake up eventually. The only thing that mattered was that she was ok. I never should have left her alone. This is all my fault.
Timeskip to the next morning
Jack's POV
I woke up the next morning with Melody's hand resting on my head, pulling me ever so closer. Did she wake up will I was asleep? Or did she sense my presence? I smiled softly, and took a deep breath, inhaling her scent. I heard the door open, but I didn't want to move because of her hand.
