I leaned back in a chair on the balcony, trying to get some rest in as I heard Edric and Kal sparring, while the others were resting for the most part. The two always seemed to be busy, one way or another.
Kal was always jumping from place to place in the rest zone between the tenth and eleventh floor, wanting to get back into the action, but knew she had to wait for the rest of the team or she would be alone in climbing the tower.
Most of the others were asleep or quietly enjoying each other's company.
I watched the skyline as the floor we were on showed a breathtaking sunset. Chills ran all over my body as goosebumps appeared, and I felt my heart pounding in my chest, through my veins and down in my feet that were bootless, airing out from being cramped in shoes that were nearly too small.
I heard a crash and turned to look, seeing Weldon had crashed into some furniture. "Hey, you ok?" I quizzed worried, as he tried to get his blue cap back onto his unruly hair.
"Yeah yeah yeah. Just tripped on a chair and other stuff." He looked at the furniture that was toppled over and picked it up and put it back. "I was coming over to see if you were hungry or thirsty or something." He pointed his thumb back over his shoulder towards the way he came.
"A glass of water or lemonade or something would be nice, if you get one for yourself and come join me. Could use the company." I motioned to an empty seat beside me.
He smiled and nodded. "Be right back." He raced to the kitchen and searched for clean glasses that the rest of the team had left in the rubble of the dirty dishes. Soon as he found a pair and poured the drinks, he ran to me.
I took the glass with a thanks and turned back to face the sky as he eased into the chair beside me, watching it as the sun made the sky repeatedly change colors fluidly. "It's nice here, isn't it?" He sipped his water.
"Very nice. Just wish we didn't have to spend all our saved points on all of this stuff. Hopefully once everyone is rested up and healed, we can move on. I know Kal is itching to get to your guy's tests."
"Yeah, well I am itching to not. I would stay here forever if I could, but..." He dragged out the last letter of the word before slurping his water from his glass like a dog, "I would rather not. I don't think I am ready."
"First of all, ew, don't do that." I scrunch my nose up, "Second, you are amazing Weldon! You will pass the Scout tests."
He put the glass down and stopped bouncing his leg as he held it on there, "How can you be so sure?"I thought for a moment. "Well, I have seen you in action. You are quick and nimble on your feet. You can fight exceptionally well. Not only that, but because you are you. You are amazing." I smiled softly at him, my hair falling into my face again as I leaned forward to put a hand on his shoulder. "You can do anything if you just put your mind and heart to it."
He looked at me, then turned and looked out at the nearly dark sky, the sun having set faster than we had anticipated. He seemed to be staring into outer space, his eyes darting ever so slightly, as if trying to process what I just told him. "Nah. I am gonna fail."
I sighed and hung my head annoyed. "You are gonna pass Weldon. You are not going to let us down." I squeezed his shoulder before letting go and pushing my hair back out of my face and getting up. "I am gonna head to bed. I have a feeling we will be out of here by tomorrow afternoon, so you should do the same."
"Yay..." He moaned melancholy as he knew I was right and that Kal would drag him there if she had to. "Alright, I will head to bed in a bit. There's some stuff I gotta do first."
"Ok. Don't stay up too late." I waved and headed to my room.
Weldon sat on the deck, watching the fake stars and moon in the sky until the last light turned out for the team, then he opened his E-Pocket. In the weapons and other gear, he grabbed a steel-string acoustic guitar he had brought with him.
He gently tuned it, and started strumming. Out flowed notes and chords of a simple song he had been writing. He began singing with his soft voice, so no one could hear.
"I have not forgotten, who I am meant to be.
I have only gotten, used to reality.
I have seen so many, possibilities.
I have seen so many, hostilities.
There is one thing I remember.
Only one thing I remember from you.
Other than this cap on my head,
This cap on my head.
Is your smile.
Is your smile,
Dad." He stopped with a soft chord and looked back up at the sky, as a shooting star flew by.
