We reached the next floor, finding a building in front of us.
"Ah yuss. Number 8. My lucky number." Kal stretched.
"It's not going to be Noe's lucky number if we don't get her to a medic!" Mercy pointed to a small cross that there was on the side of the building, it saying that there was medical help there.
"I'll get Noe to the med center." Dustin offered, and scooped her up. "Anyone else injured that hasn't told me?"
The others shook their heads. Dustin nodded. "Go check us in to the floor." He raced towards the med center, and the seven of us left behind headed into the main entrance of the building.
We walked on in, hearing a series of voices chattering from the other groups as they waited in the lobby for the challenges to begin. I walked to the front desk to pay and get us a room.
"Hello. Welcome to Izeuegya's floor. How many is in your party?" The clerk beamed, his cheeks having red spots as his fuzzy yellow hair was tipped black and he had some sort of tail.
"Nine." I paid for the room.
"Alright. You have room 426. The Spear Bearer test will begin shortly."
"Spear Bearer test?" Edric asked confused.
"Well, yes. This is the floor of the Spear Bearers." He beamed, lightning seeming to race around in his eyes.
Mercy and Edric looked at each other. That meant everyone in the lobby were spear bearers.
"You guys go on ahead." Mercy nodded to us. "Get some rest and stuff. Edric and I will take our tests so we can move on."
We nodded and headed upstairs.
"I wonder what happens to a team who doesn't have a spear bearer or someone of a group." Ewart looked at them as we walked towards the elevator.
"Maybe they move on, or someone else takes the test." Kal shrugged.
"Maybe." Weldon nodded. "I am exhausted, so I need my sleep." He stretched, before wincing as we all heard his back pop. He gave a tiny squeak of an ow.
"Hopefully this room has massage chairs." Kal sighed. "I think my brother mentioned in his letters to me that one of these specialized test floors did."
"Let's hope so. I could use it." Weldon winced and he lowered his arms, his back cracking and popping again while doing so.
Edric lifted Mercy on his shoulder so the tiny Dwarf guide could see over the crowd. "See anything?"
"I see a stage like thing. And several doors." She peered over the crowd of a hundred or more spear bearers. "There's someone coming on stage."
A face filled the screen. "Hello Spear Bearers! Welcome to the eighth floor of the tower. While your teammates rest, this floor determines whether you, and your team will climb on. But mostly you. While they may move on, you, might die." The face dimmed from it's light, before lighting up again. "I am your host, Eldu. If you would please break off into pairs, we can begin our testing. A guide will guide you to your doors to join other groups." A bunch of small lights flew from Eldu's hand, making Edric suspect that the host was not a spear bearer, but a wave controller, but who knew the truth.
Mercy gently let the light float in her hand for a second, before it started flying towards the door to the far left. Edric started walking that way as Mercy stayed on his shoulders.
Once they reached it and a few other groups were there, she jumped down and they went on in.
They looked at the scene around them. White walls made the room seemed never-ending, but was actually only as big as basketball court. The panels turned to reveal a bunch of platforms.
The first test began, as the platforms on the ground began to rise and fall, and the ones in the walls moved in and out. Mercy looked around, seeing a hole in the ceiling. "Edric, I think we have to get up there." She whispered to him and nodded up towards it, as he shifted his eyes up to look.
"Got it." He nodded, and adjusted his beanie so he did not lose it. The two of them looked for a pattern of the pillars, to try to find away to the top. Mercy saw one of the other spear bearers jump onto a platform and ride it up, and jumped off onto another one before the first one smashed into the ceiling.
She watched their path, before finding a clear path for her at the same time that Edric spotted an opening, and shot up to fly through. Mercy bolted for the platforms and jumped up onto the first one then quickly onto the next and third. Edric flew up and dodged the platforms from hitting him, before landing on one and climbing by foot on the rest.
The other spear bearers soon followed, before the ground filled with a thin layer of water that electrified and started filling up slowly.
Edric reached the hole before Mercy and looked for his teammate, some of the other spear bearers climbing the shaft to safety, while others fell.
His red eyes soon landed on the silver-haired girl, as she was near the water and unable to make a far jump. "Mercy!" The fifteen-year-old shouted worried. He started racing down the platforms until he was at the one she couldn't reach. "Mercy you have to jump."
"I won't make it!" She looked petrified, something he had never seen before.
"Come on! You have to try. I'll catch you!"
"It's too risky. I can't pass. Go. Don't fail the others. "
"No. You are our teammate too. Now, jump!"
She closed her eyes and ran and jumped, as he grabbed her hands and hoisted her up onto the platform just as hers was submerged. "Now come on!" They raced up the last ones, and quickly climbed into the hole, before it closed behind them.
Mercy sighed relieved. "Thanks Edric..."
"You're welcome Mer." He smiled as they climbed up into the next round.
