Shawn's POV
Mel was right. We did need therapy. That night, she went online and found the best couples therapist in New York City. The next morning, Mel called and made an appointment. Unfortunately we couldn't be seen walking into the building so Dr. Lacey C. Preston made a special house call.
"I just want to start out by discussing what each of you believe the main problem is. Mellie, how about you start." Dr. Preston started.
"Well, I think that Shawn's temper causes a lot of our fights. He gets aggressive, which causes me to stress out and react." Mel replied.
"Oh whatever." I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
"This is what I mean!" blurted Mel.
"Shawn, for this to be a productive session, I'm going to ask that the both of you keep your negative comments to yourself. We want to work on reaching a common goal. Now, what do you believe the main problem is?"
I have a list 100-meters long of things that I think cause fights and stress. Not saying all 100-meters is all Mel but a lot of it is her fault.
"She's moody all the time, which causes me to react, blah, blah, blah."
"I'm pregnant!" interrupted Mel. "I can't alway control my emotions!"
"You weren't pregnant a month ago! You were moody then!"
"Well who's fault is it that I'm pregnant? Who's the one who bitched about wearing a condom?" she yelled back.
"Enough." Dr. Preston demand. "Obviously you two aren't on the same page yet. My next question is, what are some things that you think are working in this relationship?"
Mel glared at me and crossed her arms. Despite all the fighting and drama, we do get along sometimes. I do actually love and care for her, even if I do snap from time to time.
"He protects me." whispered Mel.
"What else?" Dr. Preston questioned.
"He... would do anything to make me happy."
She was true. All I want is for her to be safe and happy. Mel and this baby are my only family at the moment.
"She is giving me a chance to be the man my father wasn't." I started. "She drops whatever she is doing whenever I need her. Mel has my back and will alway fight for me."
Mel reached over and grabbed my hand. She lightly squeezed it and smiled at me.
"This is a good start you two. I think that's enough for today." Dr. Preston stated, standing up. "I would like you two to do a little homework. I want you to sit down for an hour at the end of the day and just talk to each other. No fighting, no physical altercations and no bickering. Got it?"
We both nodded our head in agreement. Mel said goodbye to Dr. Preston and scurried away. I walked her to the elevator.
Right as the doors opened, she turned to me.
"I saw the bruises."
"I-I..." I started.
"If you continue to behave this way, I will call the police and have you arrested. She is carrying your baby, be the father you wish you had growing up. Work towards your goal and start to change."
I nodded my head in agreement. I seriously needed to change or Mel would take the baby and leave. It's cheesy and I've said it before, but she is all I have and I need her.
I went back to the apartment. Mel was digging through the fridge humming.
"I'm going to make dinner." she said, not looking back at me.
"I love you." I blurted.
She stopped what she was doing and slowly turned towards me.
"Honestly, I can't love you at the moment."
Mellie's POV
"Honestly, I can't love you at the moment."
"I'm going to be the man my father wasn't." he said, stepping towards me.
"Don't tell me, show me."
Shawn nodded his head. He then proceeded to set the table and help with dinner. Once the meal was complete we sat down across from each other.
"Have you felt the baby move yet?" Shawn asked.
I laughed a little before setting down my fork.
"I'm 6 weeks pregnant. It's the size of a pomegranate seed."
We both laughed some more. It was weird to think that a human was growing inside of me.
"I've never done this baby thing before so I don't know when things should start happening." laughed Shawn.
We continued to talk about random things. Like when we wanted to tell people and how we wanted to do it. How much time were we both going to take off. If we wanted a nanny and. me being a stay at home mother. Just normal things any couple who is expecting would talk about.
"I'll clean up. You look tired."
I thank Shawn and made my way up to bed. He was right, I was extremely tired. Shawn joined me a half an hour later. He got into bed and wrapped his arms around me.
"Do you want a boy or girl?" I asked, snuggling closer to him.
"On one hand, I want a boy so that I can show him all the cool manly stuff but on the other hand, I want a little girl to spoil. What about you?" he questioned.
"I want a healthy baby."
Shawn agreed with me and kissed me goodnight on the cheek. The next month was crazy. We had therapy once a day along with our 1 hour of just talking. Some days, we'd have two sessions, depending on our mood. We were starting to grow closer. I could tell that Shawn was in a better mood when he came home from work. If we started to argue, instead of yelling, we talked it though.
I had started to show a tiny bit around 10 weeks, by 12 weeks I had a tiny bump, which was still hideable. Shawn and I went back to the doctor to have a 3 month weigh in and check up. Everything was perfect and a month from now, we would find out the gender of the baby.
"This is amazing." Shawn said while laying in bed the night after the appointment.
We had gotten copies of my ultrasound and he wouldn't put them down.
"What do you want for your birthday?" I asked, casually slipping it in.
"I want us to stay in bed all day." he replied, rubbing my belly and smiling.
"How about we go out for dinner?"
"If I go out then I'll be bother by a bunch of people. The guy back home want to go to Vegas and ironically, my father called and wants to have us over for dinner."
His father wanted to sit down and actually talk to me? Something was up.
"Let's go to dinner at your father's. We can get it out of the way and never have to do it again."
Shawn looked up at the ceiling and sighed.
"I'll call him in the morning and let him know we will be joining him." said Shawn, kissing my belly.
A huge smirk grew on his face.
"I did some research today." he started, kissing a tiny line down the center of my stomach. "You can have sex until your water breaks."
"Shawn!" I shrieked, playfully hitting his arm. "I'm not in the mood!"
"I can change that!" he chucked, pulling my panties down and sticking his head between my legs.
