What the actual fuck was I thinking? I couldn't go out. I quickly redialed Nat's number and told her it was a mistake.
Did I actually think that I could go to a club while 6 months pregnant? Shawn was an adult and so was I. If he wanted to go out with his ex, that's fine by me. I curled up on the living room couch and flipped on the tv.
4 Hours Later
"Mel." said Shawn, lightly rubbing my arm.
I opened my eyes and started directly into his.
"What?" I asked, sitting up.
"The door was wide open. Did you forget to shut it?"
I looked at Shawn even more confused then I had before. I had locked the door right before I laid down. I was alway so nervous about someone breaking in, that I always made sure that all the doors were locked.
"No? I locked it."
"I walked up to a door wide open." said Shawn.
"I told you someone was wandering in the hall and wiggling the door handle!"
Shawn stood up and did a quick scan of the house, nothing was missing or out of place. Why would someone break in and not take anything? This entire building was full of lavish apartments and had been a target for robbery before. Obviously if you unlock someones door without consent of the owners, your intent in clearly criminal.
Shawn's phone buzzed. He looked at it and excused himself to his office. I could faintly hear parts of the conversations.
"What do you... he tried to visit ... the hospital?"
More words I couldn't make out.
"You're telling me... note... take Mel?"
Take Mel? Nobody is taking me anywhere unless it involves the beach.
"The door... wide open... Mel is okay."
Shawn ended the call and stepped out of his office.
"Who is in the hospital and who is trying to take me?" I blurted.
"Noah got into an accident and nobody is going to take."
"Stop lying to me." I demanded. "I'm so tired of all these secrets."
Shawn laughed and pushed his hair out of his face. What was so funny to him? Did he think that it was just okay to keep this many secrets?
"Why were you out with Kendall?"
"Because I wanted to go out." he responded, crossing his arms.
"Liar."
"Don't start with me Mel. There are just some things you don't need to know."
"Don't start with me Mel! Blah, blah, blah!" I mocked. "Mel do this, Mel do that!"
Anger filled Shawn's eyes.
"Oh I'm Princess Mellie! I sit on my ass all day, spend money that isn't mine and bitch about things I have no clue about!" Shawn mocked, dancing on his toes.
Shawn danced around mocking me. He was starting to piss me off even more.
"I'm Shawn! I physically abuse my pregnant girlfriend, tell her what to do all the time and think it's okay because I don't know what a consequences is! I also think it's okay to run off and keep secrets!"
Shawn stopped and spun towards me.
"That's right. I said it."
"Take that back." demanded Shawn.
"Or what? You'll hit me?" I laughed.
Shawn knew what I was saying was true and I could tell that it killed him inside. The last few months had been great. We didn't have any major arguments or gotten physical.
"The truth hurts."
I stood up and pushed past Shawn. Before I could go upstairs, Shawn firmly grabbed my arm.
"I trade, sell and acquire illegal goods and screw the government out of billions."
"W-what?" I stuttered.
"That's where all this money is from."
He did what now?
"Very funny."
Shawn turned me completely towards him.
"Noah was shot during a deal and Kendall was the only person who knew where the guy was. She only agreed to meet with me in public so I did what I had to do."
"Is this some sick joke?" I asked.
"I don't lie to you because I don't want you knowing the truth. I lie because the truth does hurt."
The room started to spin and it go harder and harder to breathe.
"I need to sit down."
Shawn led me over to the couch and sat next to me. I started to cry into his shoulder. This was all so overwhelming. Everything Shawn told me sounded so fake and unrealistic but the way he sounded, made it also sound oddly real. Shawn's money was dirty. How was I so blind to everything?
"It's a girl." I whispered.
"Really?" asked Shawn, looking into my eyes with excitement.
I nodded my head yes but couldn't get what he said off of my mind no matter how hard I tried. Did I want to raise a child with someone who could possibly go to jail or even worse, end up shot like Noah? It just didn't sit right with me.
"Say something." Shawn blurted.
"I think we need to break up."
The color drained from his face.
"Because of my line of work? Melody, be rational here."
"I am being rational. I don't think raising a baby with you is a good idea." I started. "Someday, this is going to catch up with you and then what will I do? I can't just be left alone with a child. My parents wouldn't help out and it's not like I have any other family who can do anything."
"You're just going to take my baby away from me because you think I'm what, dangerous?" Shawn asked.
"She is going to need a stable home with parents who don't have a chance of ditching when things get hard."
Shawn got really quiet.
"I'll quit."
"You know that's a lie." I replied.
Shawn smirked and attempted to cover it up. Money was his weakness. He was power hungry and money driven. He could walk away from that job but he would eventually find another just as illegal.
"So this is it?" he asked.
I rested my forehead against his as he placed his hand on my stomach. I loved Shawn. I didn't need his money or even want it. I wanted us to be a family. A normal family. Shawn would make a great father. He was protective but kind.
"I..." I trailed off.
"Let's go to France." Shawn blurted. "For your birthday. We can leave tomorrow."
He pulled me off the couch. The was an extremely sharp pain in my stomach. Suddenly, a small stream of blood ran down my leg. I winced at the pain.
"Fucking shit!" Shawn yelled. "We need to go to the hospital!"
