February 1st

Shawn called the main desk and had the car pulled around.

"We'll stay for dinner but we are leaving right after. Deal?" Shawn asked.

"Deal." I responded, linking my arm with his.

The car ride over was mostly silent. Shawn had one hand on the wheel and the other on my knee. A sharp pain in my lower back caused me to wince.

"Are you okay?" he asked, looking in my direction.

"I'm fine, just a little back pain." I said, faking a smile.

"Maybe we should just cancel and go home." worried Shawn.

"I'm fine! I promise."

Shawn kissed my hand lightly and focused back on driving. We arrived at his father's house around 6 pm. There were cars everywhere.

"Regular dinner my ass." Shawn groaned under his breath.

The valet took the keys from Shawn as he ran over to my side to help me out of the car. My entire body ached. I wasn't used to having swollen feet and . I grabbed Shawn's hand as he led us inside.

"Shawn!" yelled his obviously drunk father. "I'm glad you two could make it!"

I smiled awkwardly and he tried to hand me a drink.

"She's fine." Shawn said, taking the drink from my hand and handing it to a passing waitress.

"Such a prude." Desmond whined.

There were at least 25 other people already here. Desmond made an announcement about dinner and we all found our seats. Dinner was served along with wine. The smell of the food made me sick to my stomach. I pushed the vegetables around with my fork, taking tiny bites.

"Don't you ever feed this woman? It looks like she doesn't know how to eat." joked Desmond, making the entire room laugh at me.

"Oh, I'm just not feeling the best." I replied, awkwardly smiling.

"Have some wine, that stuff cures anything." he said, gesturing for a waiter to pour me a glass.

"I'm alright."

"Where is your ring?" he asked, looking at Shawn and I.

"It's the wrong size."

"Bullshit." he shot back.

"We decided to put the engagement on hold." Shawn interrupted. "With everything that is going on, we want no more attention brought to us."

Desmond stood up and tapped his glass with a knife, signaling a toast.

"A toast to my son and his money hungry slut!"

"Oi! Take that back!" Shawn yelled, standing up.

"I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking. She won't marry you but will let you buy her expensive things? You're a naive child."

I stood up and grabbed Shawn's shoulder.

"Let's go." I demanded.

"You're just worried that I'll cut you off! I know you're almost out of money and since the board voted you out, you've been on a downward spiral." sneered Shawn. "News flash Desmond, all your money is gone and I'm done refilling your account."

"He'll leave you for that Kendall girl." Desmond blurted, looking directly at me. "He always goes back to her."

"He doesn't love her." I whispered.

"Oh and you think he loves you? Honey, you better run while you can."

"I'm not going anywhere and neither is she!" Shawn yelled back.

I pushed in my chair and tugged on Shawn's jacket. The stress was causing more sharp pains in my back.

"We're leaving." Shawn said, turning around.

"Typical Shawn." laughed Desmond.

Shawn quickly spun around a stormed at his father.

"If I was "typical Shawn" I would have left her the minute I found out she was pregnant but no, I love her. I'm going to be the man you aren't."

"Nice one. You got the bitch pregnant." chucked Desmond.

"Go to hell Desmond." Shawn growled back.

We ran out of the house and went straight home. Shawn ranted the entire way home about how he was cutting his father off and how he was going to rub this baby in his face.

"I don't think I want to know if it's a boy or a girl." I blurted, changing the subject.

"Why not?"

"It will be a nice surprise! We can paint the room neutral and buy neutral clothing." I replied.

Shawn looked back at the road. We were silent the rest of the way home. He marched inside and went straight into his office. I changed into my pajamas and sat beneath the library, next to Shawn's office.

I scrolled through my iPad, looking at nursery ideas. Out of nowhere, I felt a slight movement in my stomach. I quickly placed my hand to where it was coming from. I was almost 14 weeks pregnant and movement at this time was rare but possible.

"Shawn!" I frantically called.

He came running out of his office in a panic.

"What's wrong?" he asked, sitting beside me.

I quickly grabbed his hand and placed it on my stomach. The baby moved slightly, causing Shawn to smile.

"Happy late birthday." I smiled, resting my head on his shoulder.

"This is the best gift anyone has ever got me."

Shawn and I sat for an hour or so and had our talk. He really wanted to know the gender so I finally gave in on that.

3 Weeks Later
"Today's the day!" the doctor said, waltzing into the room. "Let's have a look see."

They dimmed the lights and started the ultrasound. We listened to the heart beat and waited patiently for the doctor to share the news.

"This is strange." the doctor started, staring at my chart.

I quickly grabbed Shawn's hand for support.

"We are going to take your blood today and then call you with the results. Nothing to worry about."

He handed us a sealed envelope like we had asked. We were going to share the news at the baby shower.

Shawn held onto the letter tightly as we left the building. The next few days were extremely hard. One of us would want to open the letter but would be talked out of it.

Shawn and I had went to bed but I couldn't sleep I finally got out of bed and wandered into the kitchen. I rummaged through the fridge and grabbed whatever I could find.

"Mel?" Shawn called, coming down the stairs.

"Do we have french fries?" I asked.

"French fries? At 4 am?"

I burst into tears. I couldn't control my emotions lately. The last few days were hard because I had been trying not to think about the gender but then I would make myself upset over it. On top of that, I had started to get cravings all the time.

"Mel." Shawn said, comforting me in a hug. "I'll go buy french fries if that's what you want."

"I want ice cream." I sobbed.

Shawn couldn't help but laugh. I was crying about food.

"My back and feet hurt so bad." I complained, sitting down while Shawn fetched the ice cream supplies.

"Then I'll rub your feet when we go back to bed."

"I don't want to do this ever again." I whined, laying my head on the table.

Shawn laughed some more and handed me the ice cream filled bowl.

"Why did you do this to me? Why can't you be the pregnant one?"

"Because I have a penis, darling."
