"Miss Google says that if we leave early in the morning, we'll be there before noon," Michael called out from the bedroom; his voice muffled by the bathroom walls.
I breathed out a laugh as I tossed my towel over the rail of the shower curtain. I dragged on my briefs and sweatpants, reaching for my toothbrush and the toothpaste. I sighed as I applied the toothpaste, running it under the water. After we had left the gas station, Michael took the wheel and forced me to take a nap because I looked like I hadn't slept. I didn't bother arguing, I already agreed with him. But despite the fact that I got some sleep, I was still tired, the space between my shoulder blades was beginning to feel tight.
I closed my eyes as I scrubbed my teeth. I was ready to fall asleep again and probably never wake up again. I heaved another sigh as I leant forward. I forced my eyes open as I rinsed my mouth, reaching for the hand towel. I stood straight up as I wiped my mouth, barely sparing a glance at the mirror. My mind did a double take and I stumbled back. My heart raced as I moved back towards the mirror to get a closer look. My eyes weren't their usual navy blue. They were glowing. A blue so pale that they were almost white. I blinked my eyes a few times and before I could wrap my mind around what I was seeing, my eyes had faded back to their original navy blue.
Quickly pulling myself away from the mirror, I picked up the sweater from the counter. I turned away from the mirror as I pulled on the sweater, stopping to whine quietly before shaking my head and forcing myself to walk out of the bathroom. I'd made the mistake of stealing a few of Sage's shirts and hoodies. I thought that if I didn't have something of his I would miss him too much, but as it turns out I miss him more than I would if I hadn't taken his clothes. It didn't help that he hadn't called or sent a text in three days.
"You okay?" Michael questioned as I dropped myself down on the double bed opposite his. "I heard you make this noise. You weren't doing anything dirty were you?"
I felt my face heat up and I grabbed the pillow closest to me, hitting him with it. "What in the actual fuck is wrong with you?" I shrieked. "What do you take me for? The weird pervy guy they put in every anime to ever exist!"
Michael howled with laughter as I continued to beat him with the pillow. I didn't stop hitting him until I started laughing too. I threw the pillow behind me as I sat back down, struggling to breathe in between laughs. Michael propped himself up onto his elbows, breathing deeply as he calmed down. His chest stuttered occasionally as he let out another laugh. I let myself fall back onto the bed, my laughter almost under control. I felt my eyes start to drift shut when Michael spoke.
"Where did Mum and Dad leave you?"
My eyes snapped open. "What?"
"Who did they leave you with?" He clarified. "I was the first one they left, so I never knew who they gave you to."
I also propped myself up onto my elbows, only to see Michael sitting up, his elbows resting on his knees as he leant forward. I stared at him for a moment. He really didn't know where I ended up. And judging by the look in his face, he really wanted to know.
"I wasn't given to anyone," I answered quietly.
"Elaborate."
"They left me in at a homeless shelter." I spat.
Michael's eyes widened, his mouth opening slightly. He didn't comment so I continued.
"I didn't have anyone who knew where I was from or who I really was. I grew up on the streets watching people who had cared for me either leave town or die. If it weren't for Anna, I probably wouldn't be here and if I was, my life would be so fucked up, it's actually funny."
"I didn't know that." He whispered. "I'm sorry, Cas, I shouldn't have asked."
"It's fine. You wanted to know just how bad I had it and now you know." I laughed, "At least I wasn't left with a nest of vampires."
"At least Gabe has a roof over his head." He argued. "His life has been somewhat stable. None of us were just fucking dumped! You were barely a year old!"
"I made it out." I countered. "Anna and James took me in and made me one of their own. Granted, I was a means to an end of a war between packs. But they love me. I'd never had that before them, nothing that I can remember at least. Gabe is still with the vampires. Nathan is who knows where and not even Tiberius can find Raziel."
"But I had it good!" He yelled back, standing abruptly. "They left me with our grandparents! I was raised in a safe home with people who loved me since before I was born! I wasn't abandoned, I was protected!"
"You can't change what happened to us." I soothed. "You can't switch places with any of us or wish that we weren't separated in the first place.'
"I know." He sighed, slowly sitting himself back on the bed. "But that doesn't make me feel any better."
"We were young, we don't know every little detail about what happened back then." I smiled gently, taking his hand and squeezing it. "I do know that Tiberius and our parents did everything they could to keep us together but it just didn't work out. We need to move on because bringing Gabe home is the only thing that matters right now."
