I released the breath I'd been holding when the door shut softly behind me. I didn't want to wake my brother just because I was struggling to sleep. I would drift off to sleep but it was fitful and the tightness in between my shoulders wouldn't allow me to relax. And I kept thinking about earlier when my eyes changed colour. I wasn't a werewolf, not yet, and my eyes had glowed despite that. I was freaked out. I hadn't said anything to Michael, I didn't know how to bring it up in casual conversation. Not with him at least.
I scrolled through my contacts, resting my elbows on the railing of the balcony overlooking the motel's car park. I didn't hesitate as I hit call, the shrill dial tone filling my ears as I pressed the phone to the side of my face. The dial tone stopped as the call was answered, Sage's voice thick with sleep.
"Cas? It's nearly four am, what are you doing awake?"
"I couldn't sleep, not properly at least."
"Did you have another nightmare?"
"Not exactly. When I did manage to sleep it wasn't for long and it was kinda fitful."
"Something's bothering you."
"...I wouldn't say bothering me."
"Then what would you say?"
"Scaring me? I can't keep up with all these changes. I threatened the blonde vampire that held a gun to my head, and she didn't even try to jump me. My emotions keep jumping from one to the other and it's wearing me down."
"I should have known you wouldn't be able to handle this all on your own. I could barely handle it when I went through it."
"You've gone through it? When?"
"In the three months Dad and I were gone. It was a fucking struggle and if Dad hadn't been there, I don't think I would have been able to hold it together. I'm not saying you can't handle it, Cas, it's just- "
"I'm still human. I know what you were trying to say, it's alright. My emotions aren't the only thing that's different now."
"There's something else?"
"My eyes changed colour."
"Changed colour?"
"They changed. As in glowed like a werewolf or witches would."
"I didn't think that would happen so soon...what colour were they?"
"They were pale blue. But not like Dayna's pale sky blue, they were a lot lighter than that."
"Good to know that your wolf will have pretty blue eyes too."
"You are such a dork."
"I'm your dork. Is it safe to assume that it's Gabriel that you guys are after?"
"Yeah, we're going to Dorian's tomorrow. I called James and gave him the address, told him that if he doesn't hear from me in a week, that he and the pack need to come get us. Selena warned us that there's a chance that Dorian won't let us leave."
"Not gonna lie, I don't know how I feel about you going in there without me and Ti.
"I have Michael and we'll have Gabe soon enough. Anything on Fabes yet?"
"No. We scoped out his packhouse, the place was abandoned like every other building we've ever been in. Fabian wasn't there and Ti's locator spell went ass up because something's blocking his magic. Ti called his siblings and Julius is looking for something that can help us find him."
"I don't want him out there alone for much longer, Sage. It might have something to do with the fact that he was born traditional, but the longer he's a wolf, the wilder he gets."
"I know, Cas, I'm worried about the same thing. We're gonna find him and bring him home. It's just gonna take a little longer than we first thought."
"...I miss you."
"I miss you too, so fucking much. I know I haven't called since I left, Tiberius has been keeping me busy. I think he's been trying to distract me so that I don't have too much time to think about you. And I promise, as soon as we find Fabian, I'm coming straight back to you. Doesn't matter if you're still at Dorian's or on your way home, I'm finding you."
"What did I tell you about being such a cheeseball?"
"You told me to quit it before you hurt me. But I can practically hear you smiling so I know you don't really care."
I laughed as I stared out at the horizon, the sky beginning to lighten ever so slightly. Sage and I talked for another half hour before we said our goodbyes. I silently slipped back into the motel room and crept towards my bed. I laid down on my back, staring at the ceiling. I heard sheets rustling and light footsteps as Michael approached my bed. My eyes met his and he frowned.
"You haven't slept." He stated.
"I slept a little. But it wasn't good."
"Why?" He questioned softly, sitting on the bed beside me. "I know you said that you have nightmares, but I can't help but feel as if there's more to it than that."
I didn't say anything in reply, not straight away. "There isn't. I just have bad dreams that I'll most likely never stop having."
If Michael knew I wasn't being completely honest, he didn't show it. He just bobbed his head before pushing up off the bed and disappearing into the bathroom. I sighed heavily and let my eyes slide shut as my mind began to wander.
