I sat up suddenly, gasping. "Mom?" I hear myself shout out before looking around. There's nobody here. Maybe I'm just dreaming. When I was younger, I would do it often. I had lost my mother young. She was driving on the interstate to her job when a semi wasn't paying attention and clipped her car, causing a 13 car pileup.
5 people died that day, including my mother.
My father tried to step up and be a good father, but he soon spiraled out of control. One day he didn't come home, claiming to go to work one day. It wasn't until the cops came back to the house before I realized what happened. Your dad is dead. Apparent suicide, they said. I wasn't surprised. I was 17.
They were going to make me move in with my aunt, but I made an agreement with them. As long as I behaved, I would be able to live on my own. I only had a few months of school left and a job, so I didn't have to worry about having to struggle to survive.
Here I am, having a dream of my mother again. She said that the powers were hereditary. Were they? I didn't remember my mom ever having powers of any kind. That doesn't mean that she couldn't have been hiding them. I make a move to get out of bed before the door opens, Steve stepping through. "Emily." I smile a small smile before rushing over and kissing me. Damn boy, relax. I kiss him back gently, smiling into his lips. He's so happy. We separate after a minute before he places another kiss on my forehead. "I was so worried about you." He wraps an arm around me, sitting on the bed. "You surprised me out there."
"Did I?" I say, resting my head against his shoulder. I'm lucky to have him.
"For someone who said they didn't know their powers, you sure knew how to control them." I did know what to do. How did I know what to do? "What's that?" He looks down at my chest. My eyes travel down before I realize I had my mothers necklace in my hand. My mom's necklace. That would make sense why I knew what I was doing. If my mother had these powers, then I would be able to control them better if I wore it.
"It's my mom's necklace. It's...special to me." I really need to know more about this. "Hey Steve?" He looks up at me, his eyes shining under the lights. "Do you guys keep up with everyone who has powers?"
"Yea. We try to keep up with everyone we know that exists. Why?"
"Is Nick the one who controls it?" I question again before he nods again. "Perfect. I need to talk to Nick asap."
Steve managed to pull a few strings before I walked into the office, seeing the Fury in all his glory. "Fury." I said, taking a few steps into the office.
"Come on in, Blake. Rogers told me that you wanted to ask a few questions." He motions to a chair before I sit down. "Ask away."
"I want to know who my mother is." He raises an eyebrow. "I mean, I know who my mother is. I want to know if she's in your database."
He begins to type on his computer before a ding pops up on the system. "Elizabeth Blake. 1 child." He reads again before looking at the computer, surprised. "Says here that she had been taken at a young age during a vacation. She returned home 4 years later, a completely different person. She had a run-in with SHIELD before it was revealed that she had abilities. Abilities similar to yours, Emily." So the dream was true. But when one door closes, another one opens. Who took my mom? And did they do this to her? "Think anymore harder, Blake, your brain might explode. That's all the information that I have." I dismiss myself before finding myself wandering the streets of New York.
I need to know who did this to my mother. Who decided that it would be right to take a child from their family and make them into a...a...a monster? I walk into the Tower, wave hello to the person at the desk before hopping up into the elevator, stopping on the floor of the living area. I walked out of the elevator, bumping into somebody before falling backwards onto my ass. "Glowstick?" I look up, before seeing my favorite genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.
"Hey Tony." He holds out a hand before helping me back onto my feet.
"What are you doing? Other than running into people, obviously." We share a laugh for a moment before the other avengers flock towards the noise.
"Whatcha guys talking about?" Clint says, walking up with a poptart in his hand.
"Is that one of Thor's poptarts?" Tony says, Clint taking a quick bite out of the toaster pastry.
"I heard my name, what's going on?" The blonde god walks up before zeroing in on the last bite of poptart going into Clint's mouth. Thor's hand goes out before his hammer comes flying. Clint stands still for a moment before running down the hallway. "MAN OF HAWK, COME BACK!" He takes off too, leaving Tony, Natasha and I in the hallway.
"Now that the idiots are gone, where were you, Em?" Natasha says, leaning up against the wall.
"I was talking to Fury." Both of their heads perk up, clearly they're interested. "I asked him about my mother. I had a weird dream when I was out. It was my mom saying that she had powers before she died. I double checked with Fury and it came out. She did. Now I'm going to find out how she got them."
"Did she happen to get kidnapped?" Natasha says, tilting her head. What does she know? I nod before she looks at Tony. "That's Zola's MO. The same person that made Bucky into the Winter Soldier."
